One of my greatest joys in life is eavesdropping. As a psychologist, I have long been interested in how people think, feel, and behave. I like to watch people’s facial expressions, listen to the words they use, and track their emotional tone. The airport is one of my favorite places where I can study others. Here people are forced to be in close proximity to each other, so there is a great opportunity to listen to what they are talking about.
Unfortunately, a lot of what I hear are complaints. I hear people whine about delayed flights and uncomfortable seats; businessmen on the phone break down on their colleagues or employees. The problems are numerous: bad weather, wars, terrible economic performance, nosy relatives, and broken bones. It may feel like the end of the world has come.
