The prolonged fight against the coronavirus, careful estimation of the “when it will finally end”, new restrictions and prohibitions – all this makes us rebel. There are no quick effects in the fight against the SAR-CoV-2 coronavirus. Two weeks of quarantine throughout Poland is not enough to contain the pandemic. They are all weary, tired, worried, but if we let go now, we will have to deal with the pandemic for months to come. Why should we take the coronavirus seriously?

One person can infect three more

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is highly contagious. Scientists from Imperial College in the UK estimated that One person with COVID-19 can infect 2,6 people on average. Most of these people will have COVID-19 mild or even asymptomatic. Therefore, you may think that there is nothing to be afraid of, since the chances of getting infected are high, and the chances of getting the disease mildly even greater. However, it is worth knowing the scale.

One of the projected end-of-pandemic scenarios is that humans will become immune to the coronavirus. If the majority of the population becomes infected, it may be possible to regain natural immunity. Before that happens, according to the forecasts of Dr. William Haseltine, a former Harvard professor, in the United States alone, between 200 and even 1,7 million Americans could die.

Considering that the estimated mortality rate from the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is around 2%, in Poland of 38 million, we could have even 760 thousand. deaths. This means, for example, the death of all the inhabitants of Krakow. Thanks to the observance of the rules, including the most important ones – maintaining social distance, avoiding human clusters, isolating the sick – the chances of such a drastic scenario are negligible.

Long-term infection with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus

Carriers of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infect for a long time. In one study, researchers found that the vector was most contagious between exposure to the infection and the onset of symptoms. This is a time when he may not yet realize he has been infected. (See more: The SARS-CoV coronavirus may be most contagious before symptoms appear)

In another, small study, researchers observed that half of patients were still infectious for one to eight days after their COVID-19 symptoms disappeared.

All this makes the coronavirus spread rapidly in the population. Limiting its “spreading” is important to all of us. The fewer infections, the easier it is to deal with them.

The more people infected with the coronavirus, the fewer doctors

61 doctors have died in Italy since the epidemic began. According to data obtained by Medexpress from the president of the District Medical Chamber in Warsaw, Łukasz Jankowski, 24 doctors in Mazovia are infected with the coronavirus. In turn, the president of the National Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives announced that 78 nurses and midwives are in quarantine, and six have been confirmed to be infected with coronavirus. Entire departments and hospitals are isolated due to coronavirus infections among staff and patients. Data on morbidity among medics are incomplete because the Ministry of Health does not keep such statistics.

However, taking into account that Poland currently has one of the lowest rates when it comes to the number of doctors per 1000 inhabitants (2,4 per 1000 inhabitants), we can wake up soon in a completely unpleasant reality. According to official statistics, there are not as many people infected with the coronavirus in our country as, for example, in Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain, and you can clearly see how much the health care system is not dealing with. There is a shortage of doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, and yet people have not stopped falling ill with other diseases.

Quarantine makes sense. The sooner we deal with the coronavirus, the less we expose healthcare workers to illness, the sooner we will be able to return to normal. Oncological patients, people suffering from heart disease, diabetics, people suffering from rare diseases who require constant medical care and rehabilitation have not disappeared. For them, we should take the coronavirus pandemic seriously and for them, we should follow the rules of quarantine.

The restrictions imposed by the government, prohibitions and orders that we must obey are tiring, difficult, tedious and cause a number of problems, but compliance with them may make us control a pandemic faster, and its effects will not be as severe for us as in others European countries. We urge you to join the # stay at home if you have the opportunity.
