85 percent – this is how effectively it is supposed to protect against hospitalization after Omikron by administering the third dose of the Janssen vaccine. The results of the study conducted at the turn of November and December have just been announced on the specialized portal medRxiv.

The study was conducted in South Africa from mid-November to mid-December 2021, which is the period when the popularity of Omikron increased from 82 to 98 percent. The analysis showed that medics who took three doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine very rarely went to the hospital on their own because of COVID-19. The booster dose of Janssen was 85% effective against Omikron.

The Janssen vaccine is doing just as well when previously doses of the preparation came from other manufacturers, including Pfizer. This resulted in a 1-fold increase in antibodies neutralizing the Omikron variant – up to four weeks after the booster dose, and a 5,5-fold increase in the number of T lymphocytes (responsible for immunity) – up to two weeks.

The results of the study are extremely important as this vaccine is part of our arsenal to fight COVID-19. The data from the study should convince healthcare professionals who have not yet taken a booster dose to do so as soon as possible, said Dr. Nicholas Crisp, deputy chief executive of the South African Ministry of Health.
