Recent studies show that when prescribed Methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and other autoimmune diseases, the vaccine may be less effective against COVID-19.
- How do people who regularly take methotrexate react to the vaccine? Only 60 percent. of the subjects’ immune system reacted correctly
- Only Pfizer’s preparation was included in the study, so it is not known how the subjects would react to other vaccines
- So how do you protect those suffering from immune-dependent inflammatory diseases from COVID-19?

In the “Annals of Rheumatic Diseases”, a study was published by scientists from three centers: New York University Langone Health, FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen. Researchers focused on rheumatological patients, primarily those suffering from immunologically-dependent inflammatory diseases (IMID).
- Can one be vaccinated against COVID in rheumatic diseases?
For the study to be reliable, it was carried out on two groups of patients. Some of them were taking Methotrexate for treatment, others were not. A control group, i.e. people who are completely healthy, also participated in the study.
All people were vaccinated with Pfizer’s preparation.
It turned out that almost 40 percent. In patients taking methotrexate, the immune system’s immune response to the vaccine was inadequate. A positive response occurred in 204 out of 208 (98,1%) control group and in 34 out of 37 (91,9%) patients who did not take methotrexate.
When a person is given the vaccine, the body produces T lymphocytes, which are cells of the immune system that are responsible for the immune response when an infection is present. In this study, it was noted that these lymphocytes appeared in all subjects except those taking methotrexate.
- How effective is COVID-19 vaccines? [COMPARISON]
Scientists do not hide that their study has a number of limitations. For example, a small group of patients included in the study. Second, it uses only Pfizer / BioNTech, so it is not known how people taking the drug would react to other vaccines.
- Check your immunity. These tests are worth doing to assess your health
Experts note, however, that more research is needed to determine how to best protect patients with immune-dependent inflammatory diseases.
It is also worth remembering that any doubts regarding the effectiveness of vaccinations and combining vaccines with other drugs, it is best to consult a doctor.
