This is how you delay the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Experts have no doubts

Good news for people with Parkinson’s disease. According to the latest research, there is a way to delay the symptoms of this serious condition. What’s more, it does not involve any expenses. How it’s possible?

Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases. It only gets better in Alzheimer’s disease. It affects 10 million people worldwide. Generally, these are patients who are 60 years of age or older. It rarely appears in younger people. One in ten is under 50 years old. It should be noted that this is a progressive disease with symptoms that begin gradually.

Parkinson’s disease symptoms and causes

The most common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include:

  1. trembling of the face, legs, arms or hands
  2. stiffness of the limbs and torso,
  3. slow movements
  4. problems with balance and coordination,
  5. cognitive decline in the later stages of the disease.

The exact causes of Parkinson’s disease are not exactly known. However, experts believe that it develops due to genetic and environmental factors. Research has shown that symptoms appear by the death of dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra, the part of the brain responsible for movement, reward and addiction.

Currently, levodopa, a drug that converts the brain into dopamine, helps manage Parkinson’s symptoms. Unfortunately, it also causes a number of side effects and does not delay the progression of the disease. However, new research from Kyoto University in Japan has shown that doing exercise twice a week can slow the development of parkinson’s in people in the early stages of the disease.

Is exercise a cure for Parkinson’s disease?

Health experts have long suggested that exercise may affect the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Research has shown that high-intensity physical activity can improve motor function. In turn, dancing can positively affect the balance and stability of walking. According to studies, regular exercise can change the progression of Parkinson’s disease even in the long run.

The latest research in Parkinson’s disease

The study involved 237 patients in the early stage of the disease and 158 healthy volunteers. The researchers gave them annual questionnaires to record the intensity, frequency and duration of training. They also conducted cognitive tests to assess their memory and verbal skills. Early in the study, researchers found that Parkinson’s patients had poorer motor, cognitive and autonomic functions than the healthy group. However, there was no difference in regular physical activity and intensity levels between the groups.

A study by Dr. Kazuto Tsukita found that in early-stage parkinson’s patients who did four hours of moderate to vigorous training per week, balance and walking disturbances progressed more slowly compared to those who exercised less.

The development of the disease is influenced by too high levels of homocysteine. Therefore, it is worthwhile to perform a Homocysteine and vitamin D mail order as a preventive measure.

One very important piece of information from our research is that the areas that exercise improves the most are also the areas that cannot be fixed with medication. I believe that training should be used in conjunction with, not in place of, drug therapy

– said Dr. Tsukita in an interview with medicalnewstoday.com.

Dr. Rebecca Gilbert, scientific director of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, who was not involved in the study, endorsed Dr. Tsukit. – The vast majority of Parkinson’s sufferers, even those who exercise regularly, end up needing medication. The goal of training should not be to replace drug therapy, but rather to work with it to maximize your quality of life – said the expert in an interview with the same service. Dr Gilbert added that, in her opinion, the strength of this study was that it investigated not only the effects of exercise, but also physical activity, understood as activities of daily living (e.g. cleaning etc.).
