Under the slogan “Polish ophthalmologists versus glaucoma”, this Saturday will be a campaign of free screening tests for early detection of this disease across the country.
– After cataract, glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness, but few people know about it and it is late detected, so on March 18 all over the country will be open ophthalmology offices, to which we invite people in whom this disease has not yet been detected for checkups, and for the last year they have not been to an ophthalmologist – says the president of the Polish Ophthalmology Society, prof. Iwona Grabska-Liberek.
PTO suspects that there are about 750 in Poland. people with glaucoma, an extremely insidious disease, leading to atrophy of the optic nerve, without causing any discomfort. – This disease does not hurt, it only steals the eyesight – emphasized the president of the society. In her opinion, almost 70 percent are not aware of their disease. people suffering from glaucoma.
– Poles do not check their eyesight prophylactically, they usually go to an ophthalmologist only when they have some visual disturbances, in the case of glaucoma, these may be limitations in the field of vision »- said Grabska-Liberek, who is the head of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Postgraduate Medical Center in Warsaw.
Chairwoman of the Glaucoma Section of the Polish Ophthalmology Society, dr hab. Anna Kamińska explained that glaucoma is not only a disease of the elderly. It is more common in them, but even young people over 35 suffer from it. After forty, it occurs in 2-3 percent. of the population, and after eighty – about 10 percent.
According to the data of the Polish Association of the Blind, about 20% of people in our country have lost their eyesight due to glaucoma. blind. Worldwide, 8 million people have become blind as a result of the development of this disease. – It is more dangerous than cataracts because the damage to the optic nerve it causes is irreversible. We cannot cure this disease, but we are able to stop its development – emphasized Dr. Kaminska.
How To Fight Glaucoma?
Treatment consists in lowering the pressure inside the eyeball (new research shows that glaucoma can also occur in people who have normal blood pressure) – caused by the aqueous humor, which is constantly produced in the eye, although in patients with glaucoma its flow into the bloodstream is insufficient . This results in the destruction of individual nerve fibers in the eye, which limits the field of vision. The scotomas first appear, which will enlarge peripherally, producing the effect of tunnel vision.
The patient can see through binoculars, which becomes narrower and narrower, and finally becomes completely blind.
– The pressure inside the eyeball is lowered with special eye drops – says prof. Jacek Szaflik Head of the Department and Clinic of Ophthalmology, II Faculty of Medicine, Medical University of Warsaw. You just need to use them regularly, usually at least once a day. But there are problems with that. Prof. Grabska-Liberek said that 60 percent. patients do not follow the doctor’s instructions and stop instilling the drug into the eye or do it too rarely.
– We perform too few surgeries to lower the pressure inside the eyeball in the treatment of glaucoma – only about 5. per year, which means that only 1 percent are operated. people with this disease. There are 10 percent of companies operating in Europe. patients with glaucoma – said the president of the Polish Ophthalmology Society. It is only worse in Turkey and Romania.
Clinics from all over Poland volunteered for the early detection of glaucoma. After finding the facility closest to your place of residence, you should report to it by phone. Three glaucoma tests will be performed free of charge: measurement of the pressure inside the eyeball (not too high), the optic nerve disc and the thickness of the cornea. You will not need any referral from a doctor that day. These facilities will allow you to have your eyesight tested free of charge:
