Tanzanian authorities have maintained for months that the country is COVID-19 free. Since April, they have not updated data on infections and mortality, so the incidence cannot be estimated. The government of Tanzania, which has 60 million people, has been insisting for months that the country is not affected by the pandemic. The authorities, despite admonitions from the World Health Organization, consistently do not publish data on the number of patients and deaths. The counter stopped in April 2020 when there were 509 infected in Tanzania. In turn, 19 people died from COVID-21. In July, President John Magufuli announced the end of the pandemic.
On February 1, 2021, Tanzania’s Minister of Health, Dorothy Gwajima, announced that the country is also not planning to vaccinate against the coronavirus. During the press conference, the woman was not wearing a mask, as were the rest of the assembled officials. Gwajima recommended that citizens take greater care of hygiene, as well as use water inhalation in the fight against the coronavirus. In turn, Fidelice Mafumiko, a chemist who is a government adviser, also suggested that herbal medicine could help with the disease. Neither of these approaches are recommended as a treatment for COVID-19 infection by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The president of Tanzania, John Magufuli, is considered a zealous Catholic. In his words, God has eliminated the coronavirus in this country. It was prayers to the Creator that were to contribute to ending the pandemic in Tanzania. The president of another African country that refuses to accept vaccines, Burundi, also speaks about the “divine intervention”. Evariste Ndayishimiye says the new infections are God’s punishment for corruption among politicians.
