Treatment of COVID-19 is still not so effective that it can be clearly said that we have adequate resources in the event of an infection. Limiting infection today relies heavily on reducing symptoms. However, this may change due to the scientists’ discovery. They found that combinations of already known drugs could be dealt with with SARS-CoV-2.

A combination of drugs can make it difficult to mutate the virus
An international group of scientists in the Journal of Infection claims that therapy against SARS-CoV-2 can become reliable thanks to the appropriate combination of drugs.
They tested the sensitivity of different Delta and Omikron variants to different combinations of four approved drugs with interferon-beta (betaferon) – another antiviral substance that can also be secreted by the human body.
Such studies are crucial because despite the decline in hospitalizations and deaths thanks to vaccination, many people suffer from immunodeficiency and the virus poses a serious threat to them.
At the same time, the ability of the germ to mutate and become resistant to treatment must be taken into account.
The authors of the discovery found combinations of known substances that, when tested on cells, were highly effective in preventing the formation of new variants.
“These are exciting results that could help improve the treatment of COVID-19-sensitive patients and avoid the emergence of treatment-resistant viruses,” says one of the project leaders Prof. Martin Michaelis from the University of Kent.
The drugs tested by scientists combined in the study with betaferon are remdesivir, molnupiravir, paxlovid and the long-known aprotinin.
The same group of researchers also recently discovered that aprotinin may help people with COVID-19.
The combination of betaferon with molnupiravir, paxlovid and aprotinin was particularly effective. The effectiveness of remdesivir in combination with betaferon showed only a slight increase.
It is probably for the same reason that the addition of antiviral interferon to remdesivir therapy made a slight difference in other studies.
Scientists also encourage further testing of the combination of these three drugs with interferon.
“If our results can be confirmed in patients, I hope that better therapies will be developed that will help us reduce the formation of dangerous COVID-19 variants” – emphasizes Prof. Jindrich Cinatl from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt (PAP)
