The coronavirus has been around the planet for over a year, so we are familiar with most of the symptoms and consequences of this disease. Cough, fever, lack of smell … However, scientists have found that there are non-obvious signs of the disease, with which covid cannot be compared from the very first minutes.
In March 2020, life was divided into “before” and “after”, showing us a new reality, where the loss of smell is almost the most terrible call. But is it? As it turns out, the coronavirus is full of surprises.
Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract
A new study from China found that 43% of people who had coronavirus went to the hospital with gastrointestinal problems 90 days after discharge.
Anorexia
According to studies, the most common of the subtle problems resulting from covid was loss of appetite, which affected 24% of those who recovered.
Nausea and heartburn
Nausea and heartburn were reported by 18% of those who were able to recover. Diarrhea noticeably spoiled the life of only 15% of those surveyed.
Belching and bloating
Less common symptoms were bloating, reported by 14% of those who recovered, and belching, from which only 10% of those surveyed suffered.
Vomiting
Vomiting was a problem for 9% of coronavirus survivors.
Bleeding during bowel movements
It is the rarest of the subtle signs of covid, with only 2% of people reporting it.
Scientists said that of 52 patients, 65% had stomach upset symptoms while still in hospital. 6% of patients experienced symptoms only after discharge, and 29% of patients had them on admission.
Alarming signs
Compared with patients who did not suffer from symptoms of intestinal disorders, patients without such difficulties were more likely to present with palpitations and fatigue.
“Patients who did not have stomach problems had less severe forms of coronavirus than those who had them. Although the difference was insignificant, it was still there, ”the researchers noted.
Dr. Jingrong Weng and colleagues also reported in their article:
“Complications of the gastrointestinal tract, including loss of appetite, nausea, belching and diarrhea, are common in patients three months after discharge from the hospital.”
The discovery of new symptoms and consequences of the coronavirus will help patients and doctors pay attention to the rehabilitation period after an illness and reduce the risk of additional health problems.
“Our data underscores the importance of gastrointestinal treatment and nutritional support for patients just discharged from hospitalization for COVID-19,” the scientists said.
In addition, it was found that a decrease in the level of oxygen in the blood, a symptom associated with severe pneumonia, is directly related to gastrointestinal ailments during the rehabilitation period.
The researchers also noted that adhering to the principles of proper nutrition during hospitalization will help to combat this problem – thus you reduce the risk of complications in the future.
Take care of yourself, try to follow the principles of proper nutrition and in no case ignore the alarming symptoms.
