Blue lips, pointed nose and sunken cheeks — these are just a few of the many symptoms of the “face of Hippocrates”. The Greek laid the foundations for modern medicine. He believed that the state of his health could be determined on the basis of a person’s appearance. Therefore, we explain what the ancient physician could read from the patient’s face.
Hippocrates, who lived at the turn of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, was attached to the term “the father of modern medicine”. The scientist laid the foundations for the development of this branch of knowledge. Through science and experiments, he tried to combat the superstition that epilepsy is caused by demon possession. He introduced many professional phrases into medical terminology, which have become a permanent part of the dictionary, e.g. diagnosis (recognition), prognosis (prognosis), thearapia (treatment), or epidemic.

The face of Hippocrates – what is it?
The face, its appearance and proportions have always fascinated ancient philosophers, artists and scientists. The father of ancient medicine also devoted a lot of time to observing human physiognomy — Hippocrates. The medic was convinced that when looking at the face, conclusions could be drawn about the condition of the patient’s spirit and body. This, incl. on this basis, he assessed the course and prognosis of treatment or the advancement of the disease.
The father of medicine noticed the characteristic changes appearing on the patient’s face before his death. The set of these traits was named precisely the face of Hippocrates. And they include, among others:
- sharp facial features,
- sunken cheeks and temples,
- sunken dull eyes
- an apparently elongated, pointed nose,
- dry tongue, clothed,
- parched and bluish lips.

Modern medicine has more precise diagnostic means and much more extensive knowledge. However, it is still very difficult to establish exactly whether the slow period of dying of a loved one has already begun. Impending death symptoms may appear hours or even weeks before death.
