Think, laugh and shed a tear: three bright film novelties in June

Think about life after watching a family saga from the life of hard workers in the American hinterland, laugh at the new comedy by Vladimir Kott and mourn (or even cry) along with the hero of Alexander Molochnikov’s drama about conflicts between close people … Summer movie novelties offer to experience the whole gamut of emotional palette .

“Hillbilly’s Elegy”

Great American Realism. Online platforms are now the refuge of the viewer, exhausted by the very big special effect that has occupied the screens of cinemas. It is online that realistic narratives, marked by good old psychologism, become possible. “Elegy …” – from this category. The story of three generations of a family from the hinterland at the foot of the Appalachians is an example of American realism, which we know from the novels of Styron and Steinbeck, from The Godfather and the Deer Hunter.

American dream in the countryside. In the Russian title of the film, this is hillbilly, “hillbilly”. And obviously not to use “hillbilly”: after all, the hero of the film says that in their family, among hard workers in Ohio, this contemptuous definition is not welcome … In this film there is a feeling of native blood and soil, a feeling of one’s country that stands behind the images of a grandmother hero, his mother, and himself, the embodiment of the American dream, not forgetting its roots.

American Manifesto. Elegy… is based on the book by venture capitalist J.D. Vance, who drew attention to the fate and psychology of the American white working class, who so decisively declared themselves by electing Trump as president. Now Ron Howard, the author of Far Far Away with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (1992), almost a movie manifesto of American identity, has taken up the study of the characters of this social stratum.

Genre is drama. Cast: Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Freida Pinto, Bo Hopkins. Watch a movie on the Netflix online platform

Glenn Close

Glenn Close, 74, the once brutal Cruella de Vil of 101 Dalmatians, the femme fatale of Fatal Attraction, and the Marquise de Merteuil of Dangerous Liaisons, could be getting tired of receiving awards for her extraordinary talent. She has an Emmy, and a couple of Golden Globes, and eight … no, nine Oscar nominations: after all, she was nominated again for her role as a grandmother in Elegy …. And she’s got to get ready for her tenth – Close will soon play Norma Desmond in the newest remake of the classic Sunset Boulevard.

“THE END OF THE FILM”

Director Mitya, with the help of the ghost of Marcello Mastroianni, escapes from the set of the series. The hero’s desertion is followed by rather ludicrous adventures. Vladimir Kott, himself the director of a dozen series, approached this matter with all competence.

Genre is comedy. Cast: Valentin Samokhin, Natalya Surkova, Yana Troyanova. In theaters May 20

“TELL HER”

Alexander Molochnikov made a film on which it is impossible not to sob. And not at all because the story of the director partly formed the basis of the story of Sasha and his separated parents. But because the author deeply understands the origins of conflicts between close people.

Genre is drama. Cast: Svetlana Khodchenkova, Alexey Serebryakov. In theaters May 13
