After the British couple spent a day at the beach with their eight-month-old son, the baby’s mother was concerned about his appearance. There is a swelling around the boy’s eye. Although the couple initially suspected that the child’s eye had gotten sand, the true diagnosis was devastating.
After returning home, the child’s mother began to suspect that something was wrong. She and her husband took their son to the emergency department. The couple hoped the doctors would say nothing happened. Within a week, the boy’s face began to change, and examinations showed that he had a cancerous tumor in one of his sinuses that the doctors could not even name at first. It turned out to be mesenchymal chondrosarcoma.
«For parents, this is the worst thing you can hear. An unknown type of sarcoma that is rare, as is the place where it was located. The news that treatment would not be easy was the worst. (…) He started chemotherapy and our life changed. He fought so hard and was a happy boy after all » — the boy’s mother said in an interview with “The Sun”.
They thought he had sand in his eye
Ted underwent six rounds of chemotherapy that shrunk the tumor down, and in December 2021, doctors also performed surgery to remove most of the tumor.
They cut as much as they could. It seemed that everything would be fine
— said the child’s mother.
After the new year, Ted received another chemotherapy, and the boy’s parents discovered a lump on his forehead. The ultrasound showed that Ted’s brain was advancing because of a break in the skull that was created during the first operation. The boy was transported to another, urgent operation in order to install a drain. It turned out a tumor it has spread to the brain and spinal cord.
I was really shocked. We just didn’t expect it. It was as if his brain was covered with a layer of sand. They put a chemotherapy port in his brain, but we were told there was nothing else that could be done. It was devastating
— recalls.
Doctors stopped chemotherapy, and Ted died 10 days later, at the age of 16 months.
«It was so sudden and terrifying. Nothing prepares you for the loss of a child » — she confessed.
The woman confessed that if she and her husband hadn’t reacted quickly enough, they would probably have lost their child even earlier. Now she urges parents to always trust their instincts and react if they suspect something is wrong.
