“They teach at school, teach at school, teach at school”: how to help a child at home?

Ahead is the longest and most difficult quarter for schoolchildren. How to support a child? What should be given special attention? Psychologist-teacher Yulia Zhigrina shares her advice.

1. Child-parent relationship

Perhaps the most important thing for any parent is a good and trusting relationship with the child. He should feel our care, love and complete acceptance, and only then we, adults, should think about academic performance, about additional circles and sections. When there are no acute problems in relationships, when children trust us and see us as a friend and authoritative adult, many learning problems disappear by themselves: just talk, discuss the situation and find ways to overcome difficulties.

A child who is not afraid of parents, but sees in them the closest and dearest people, is ready to share both joys and difficulties with them, ask for help and accept it, as well as seek solutions on their own. But this happens only in families where mutual respect and love come first.

2. Self-esteem of the child

Self-esteem in primary and secondary school age is still very unstable and depends on the opinions of others, especially close and significant adults. Therefore, parental support is especially important.

In our society, it is customary to take the achievements of the child for granted, but to notice and scold mistakes and punctures for them. As a result, instead of «accumulating victories», the child involuntarily «accumulates» his defeats.

Try to consciously focus on the child’s victories, notice his efforts and even the most insignificant achievements — he folded his briefcase or got ready for training, he himself, without being reminded, put away toys or washed the dishes. Hang in a conspicuous place all his diplomas, diplomas, drawings, works, collect a «portfolio», keep a diary of joyful moments, writing down together everything that brought positive emotions during the day.

3.Organization of the workplace

Trite, but true: nothing should distract the student from doing homework. Posters, an abundance of stationery, a view outside the window, especially of the playground, can make lessons take hours.

It is necessary to properly organize the storage of textbooks, notebooks and additional materials. For each school subject, it is better to allocate a separate folder in which all the necessary textbooks and materials will be stored, sign it and place it on a shelf next to the table. Then the child will easily and quickly find everything he needs.

4.Healthy lifestyle

In order for a child to learn better, it is important to form healthy habits in him and ensure the correct mode of work and rest. Most children quickly get used to a clear daily routine and structured activities, which helps them organize their activities.

It is important to take into account the well-being of the child: in case of malaise, it is necessary to give him a good rest and sleep. Additional classes: circles, tutors, sections and other loads — should be in moderation, according to the child’s ability.

5. The presence of like-minded people

It is extremely important that in the environment of the child there are peers and adults who are passionate about their work. Help him find friends and acquaintances who will be a guide for him, who will help form the right life values.

Invite your child’s friends home to see what their hobbies are and how they behave. You can arrange literary evenings, scientific meetings for your student and his peers. Attend master classes, go to work with friends and acquaintances with your children so that they see a keen interest and love for their work.
