The doctor talks about the treatment of refugees from Ukraine
«Usually, when we open at 15, a line of patients is waiting in front of the door. He visits a dozen or so people a day, with various problems. Most often they are internal diseases: hypertension, diabetes, hypothyroidism »- told PAP one of the originators of the consultation point for refugees, Joanna Mieżyńska-Kurtycz from the provincial hospital in Szczecin.
The point has been operating since March 8. It was established on the initiative of volunteer doctors who admit refugees from Ukraine with chronic diseases so that they would not interrupt the treatment started in their home country.

As the doctor said, patients with more complicated chronic diseases also come to the point, including patients after kidney transplants – these people were dealt with by transplantology specialists from the provincial hospital.
«There are also acute patients who need to be immediately transferred to a hospital emergency department. For example, an 85-year-old lady appeared in a very serious condition, she came to us with a serious infection. As it turned out, she stayed in the shelter for over a week »- Mieżyńska-Kurtycz said.

As she explained, the woman had a problem with receiving help elsewhere due to the lack of a stamp in the passport confirming the crossing of the border. The patient was taken to the emergency department and then to the internal department of a provincial hospital.
Several cancer and cardiology patients were also referred to hospital outpatient clinics. In the event that the hospital does not have such a unit as the patient would require, doctors from the consultation center make a “call to a friend”.
«She came to us pregnant with a stomachache in the fifth month. We do not have gynecological or obstetric units in the hospital structures. After the call, a gynecologist friend came to fetch the patient and took her to her office in a private car »- Mieżyńska-Kurtycz said.
The doctor noted that Ukrainian and speaking colleagues are of great help. Often, patients also come in the company of a Polish-speaking person.
«We were surprised by the wave of hate on the Internet that poured out on us. There were a lot of negative comments that we are taking places from Poles who are waiting in queues. Patients imagine that, for example, an endocrinologist is sitting at the point and accepting refugees instead of receiving them. It’s not like that»Mieżyńska-Kurtycz said.

She explained that any specialist in internal medicine can treat basic subspecialty units – “to treat hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism with the extension of solid drugs or their slight modification, we do not need an endocrinologist right away, we are well prepared for this”.
«We take no one’s place, that was not our goal. We do everything ourselves, after working hours, as part of volunteering so that someone who escaped from the bomb would not be killed by uncontrolled diabetes within a week of arriving in Poland»Said the doctor.
She assured that Polish patients do not have to worry about being neglected. «We help everyone the same. Each of us works a lot »- she pointed out.
So far, about 30 people – mainly doctors – have volunteered to help Ukrainian patients at the consultation point.
The point is intended for adult patients with chronic diseases in the field of internal diseases, incl. with hypertension, cardiovascular, kidney, oncological, endocrine diseases, diabetes. It is open from Monday to Friday from 15.00-19.00 in building J of the provincial hospital at ul. Arkońska in Szczecin.
