Two specialist doctors in the pediatric ward of the Chełm hospital have pronounced the opt-out clause. This caused difficulties in the staffing of the roster. The management of the facility applied to the Lublin voivode for permission to temporarily suspend the operation of the pediatric ward. Young patients will be discharged home or transferred to other hospitals in the region.

– I do it with great sorrow, but I have to. The duties at the ward are scheduled until February 9. If the situation does not change in the coming days, it will not be possible to provide on-call duty in the ward from February 10, Arnold Król, the deputy director of the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Chełm, told PAP.
As he explained, due to the inability to provide medical care in the ward – in accordance with the procedure – he applied to the Lublin voivode for permission to temporarily suspend the operation of the ward from 10 to 28 February.
The press spokesman of the Lublin voivode, Radosław Brzózka, confirmed that the office received a request from the management of the hospital in Chełm. As he explained, the requirement to obtain the consent of the voivode for the suspension of the branch’s activity is enshrined in the act on medical activity. – We will process this application – added Brzózka.
The deputy director of the hospital in Chełm said that there are five doctors working in the pediatric ward, including four specialists in paediatrics. There is also one resident who is not yet on duty. Two specialist doctors issued opt-out clauses which allow doctors to work more than 48 hours a week. This caused difficulties in the staffing of the duty in the ward.
Currently, 15 children are being treated at the ward. The king said that if the operation of the ward is suspended, patients who can be cured by February 9 will be discharged home, while the rest, requiring further hospitalization, will – upon agreement – be transferred to other hospitals with pediatric wards in the region or to a children’s hospital. clinical hospital in Lublin.
The king noted that he was conducting talks, among others on the employment of additional doctors for the functioning of the pediatric ward. – We will make every effort not to suspend operations, but for today the situation is such that such a threat is real – added the director.
The Lublin voivode, Przemysław Czarnek, sent a statement on Wednesday, in which he wrote that he informed the Minister of Health Łukasz Szumowski about the situation in the hospital in Chełm. – The minister informed the Lublin voivode that he would immediately intervene in this matter – wrote Czarnek.
The voivode reminded that the hospital in Chełm was not subordinate to the voivode but to the voivodship marshal. Lublin. Czarnek emphasized that he was cooperating with the National Health Fund on an ongoing basis and recalled that the hospital in Chełm received PLN 1,4 million at the end of 2017, and by February 9 it will receive another PLN 3,5 million. – The voivode has no other means of translating into the hospital staff policy – he stressed.
