– We receive more and more patients who have been taking, for example, popular drugs containing diazepam or tramadol hydrochloride for 15-20 years. If we do not write out the drug, we condemn them to the fact that, for example, they will struggle with panic attacks or attacks of increased pain – says Dr. Agnieszka Orłowska, internist and family medicine specialist. Some psychiatrists write it down very often, others hardly at all. Why? Because it really works; and fast. A patient who has tried it once will return to the doctor asking for a happiness pill. Those who tried it say that it is better than the overrated Prozak because it works instantly. It is abused not only by people with depression or anxiety disorders, but also by, for example, actors fighting stage fright.

The opioid pain reliever and sedative drug that is said to have killed Prince contains acetaminophen, an innocent paracetamol, and oxycodone (a derivative of morphine). – The drug is metabolized in the intestine and liver. It cannot be used by pregnant women or nursing mothers, because it passes through the placenta and into breast milk. Already in a dose above 4 grams it is dangerous, it can lead to liver and kidney failure. And in combination with alcohol, sleeping pills, sedatives, antiemetics or neuroleptics, it can cause severe respiratory failure and even lead to death – says Dr. Agnieszka Orłowska, internist and family medicine specialist. Prince was probably addicted to this drug. This drug in Poland can be purchased only on prescription. It costs almost one hundred zlotys and is reimbursed only for cancer patients. It is particularly addictive if it is administered not in the form of tablets, but injections.

It makes it easier to fall asleep and improves the quality of sleep. Some people fall asleep just 20 minutes after taking the pill. Sometimes they “fly away”, eg during a conversation, in the middle of an unfinished sentence. After swallowing the tablet, it is better not to wander around the room, but to lie down. If the alarm clock forces us to get up earlier than after 6-8 hours of tablet operation, we may have the so-called “Retrograde amnesia”. Patients demand a drug containing Zolpidem because after it, unlike many other sleeping pills, they wake up fresh and ready to work in the morning.

It helps with anxiety, anxiety and depression as well as relieves symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Therefore, although doctors and manufacturers of the drug containing Oxazepam warn that it must not be combined with alcohol, it is the dream of those who, like Marylin Monroe, soothe the pain of the soul with both. If an elderly patient who has been prescribing a drug containing tramadol for 20 years comes to a doctor, my hands are tied. I write out a prescription, “paying” for many years of errors of such “treatment” – says Dr. Agnieszka Orłowska. Maybe before we reach for medications, let’s first look for the reasons for our insomnia, sadness or pain. To deal with the cause, not just masking the symptoms.
