Omicron’s BA.2 sub-variant is more infectious than its highly pathogenic predecessor. The estimates of Polish scientists show that it will soon become dominant in our country. How do you know if you are infected with BA.2? There may be two specific symptoms for this.

  1. Sub-option BA.2 aims to displace the original variant of the coronavirus, also in Poland
  2. He is responsible, inter alia, for the surge in infections in China – the country recently recorded a record number of infections. The highest epidemic in this country
  3. In addition to the symptoms typical of the previous variants, there are two most common symptoms in BA.2. At the moment, it is too early to talk about a rule. However, it can be assumed that in the event of these symptoms, infection with BA.2 may have occurred

Symptoms of the BA.2 sub-option. What to look for?

At the beginning, it should be emphasized that the Omicron sub-variant appeared relatively recently, and therefore there is no extensive research on it yet. At the moment, we can therefore base, for example, on reports from doctors receiving patients infected with this sub-variant. It turns out that in the case of BA.2, two specific symptoms come to the fore: dizziness and a strong feeling of fatigue. These are the symptoms most commonly reported.

The list of ailments associated with BA.2 is of course longer and also includes those that occurred with the classic Omicron or previous variants. So they are:

  1. fever
  2. cough
  3. sore throat
  4. headache
  5. muscle pain
  6. elevated heart rate

At the same time, with the Omikron BA.2, there is virtually no loss of taste and smell, or difficulty in breathing.

  1. Also check: The number of people infected with the coronavirus is rising dramatically in European countries. There are two reasons

Sub-variant BA.2, due to mutations that distinguish it from the classic Omicron, may elude PCR tests for coronavirus. This means that symptomatic diagnosis may be crucial in identifying infection foci. Realizing that you may be sick and isolating yourself can prevent further transmission of the virus.

What do we know today about the BA.2 sub-option? It is significantly different from the classic Omicron

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently reported that the new Omicron sub-variant mainly affects the upper respiratory tract, not the lungs, as previous variants. At the same time, however, experts emphasized that this line is significantly different from the Omicron. It is about as many as 20 other mutations compared to the predecessor, which means that we are dealing here with a strain different on many levels.

One of the differences is the detection of the virus through PCR testing. BA.2 is much harder to catch. In the case of the sub-variant, there is also a much higher infectivity, which is particularly worrying considering that until now it was the classic Omikron that was considered a highly pathogenic variant. More than any of the predecessors, i.e. the Wuhan coronavirus, the Alpha or Delta variant.

What does it mean that BA.2 is more contagious? We explain

The very concept of “more contagious” is not particularly illustrative. Experts say BA.2 is easier to catch than if we were in contact with previous lines. However, we still do not know what this means in practice.

However, scientists from the University of NSW’s School of Public Health looked into this issue. Their calculations show that the BA.2 sub-option is 25-30 percent. more contagious than the BA.1 sub-option.

From the graphic above, we can see how much more infectious the successive variants of the coronavirus are compared to the original Wuhan strain (in the focal point). The Alpha variant was 1,4 times more contagious, the Delta variant – twice. Omicron increased this number significantly, infecting 2 to 4 times more. The BA.6 sub-variant is 2 to 5 times more infectious than the Wuhan variant.
