The love of experiments has lived in me since childhood. Sitting with my little brother the other day and relaxing with half a dozen bottles of beer, we argued about the possibility of mixing different types of alcohol. To beer, in his opinion, vodka asked for.
I dissuaded my brother, but he did not believe me, and in the morning he felt bad. I share with you my experience, whoever takes it into service will not suffer from a terrible hangover.
Story from my subscriber Eugene.
How does mixing drinks affect a person?
Each type of alcohol has a number of special properties. Their combination often leads to mutual reinforcement of the influence exerted. Dehydration, intoxication of the body, pressure surges, nausea, fatigue and headache – all this is felt much more tangibly.
The most suitable for mixing is an alcohol similar in properties. For example, they go well together:
- vodka – price from 400 rubles per 0,5 l, good brand;
- whiskey – at least 600 rubles the same volume;
- burner – 260₽;
- schnapps – 700₽;
- bourbon – 750₽.
For lovers of grape spirits, well suited:
- cognac – 340 rubles;
- armanyak – 1700₽;
- hair – 550₽;
- splash – 1 100₽;
- brandy — 350₽;
- metaxa – 800₽;
- grappa — 320₽.
Note! Sometimes undesirable consequences can be avoided if you develop a culture of drinking (which I advise you) and drink alcohol in the most pleasant mode for the body. And for this you need to know a little popular chemistry.
Why mixing hurts
The body of each person (mine, yours, that guy behind the counter) can process on average about 8 grams of pure alcohol per hour. When mixing, this limit is often exceeded due to the fact that the usual dosages are used in creating a cocktail.
I still remember well my very first unsuccessful experiment (more precisely, its consequences). An ordinary glass of 30 milliliters of vodka does not greatly exceed the recommended dose.
But if you mix two, three, four or more components in the usual dosage and drink it all, even if it takes 10-15 minutes, the load on the liver will increase many times over.
The second reason for the harm of mixing is banal biochemical processes. And here, as an illustration, our standard – beer with vodka – is ideal. Using their example, it is easiest to explain why mixing has such a strong effect on us and harms the body.
Why you shouldn’t mix beer with vodka
Individually, these are two different products obtained through different manufacturing processes. We have beer through fermentation, while vodka needs distillation or rectification. And this is even in cases where they are made from the same raw material (for example, grain).
Initial chemical properties affect the process of passage of an alcoholic beverage through the body. Vodka quickly passes through the digestive system and is poorly absorbed compared to beer.
That is why, to achieve a commensurate effect, you need to drink 25 ml of vodka and only about 100 ml of beer (respectively, 8 and ≈5 grams of pure ethanol).
The reason for this state of affairs is carbon dioxide (it is visible visually in the form of bubbles). When it enters the stomach, it irritates the walls of the stomach, due to which everything that is in it begins to be absorbed by the body an order of magnitude more actively than usual.
Additional Information! I want to note that a similar effect is observed when using any soda, and not just foamy beer.
A high dose of alcohol enters the blood at a rapid pace, with which the body is unable to cope.
There is an increase in the effect of intoxication, and even the amount of beer and vodka that a person previously calmly endured separately knocks him down and leads to disorientation, memory loss, and in some cases to severe poisoning.
That is why people get drunk even if they have consumed less alcohol in terms of pure ethanol.
A few more dangerous combinations
There is an answer to the main question. But for general education, it will be useful for readers of my blog to know a few more options for mixing alcohol, which are best avoided. From my experience, never try:
- Tequila with… anything. In general, not every person can drink alcohol on a cactus basis. A large amount of aldehydes and the presence of even a small amount of methyl alcohol precludes any combination except – verified by me – tomato juice and non-alcoholic non-carbonated drinks.
- Beer with wine. Surprisingly, in addition to the usual hangover (albeit intensified), such a cocktail gives me a feeling of severe intoxication and food poisoning.
- Vodka and red wine. You can also mix them only if you want to feel not only a bright hangover in the morning, but also severe pain in your stomach.
Important! Mixing different alcoholic beverages can create new flavors, but care must be taken. Otherwise, it’s better to abandon experiments altogether and use only recipes that have been tested by other people.
I only have experience with four undesirable combinations, does anyone have experience with other drinks? Share, it will be interesting to know about the sensations.
