Theraflu is a preparation used to treat symptoms of colds and flu. The drug is available over-the-counter in the form of a powder to dissolve in water, syrup, hard capsules and film-coated tablets. Most of the Theraflu products contain acetaminophen (eg Theraflu ExtraGRIP, Theraflu Max Grip) and additional active substances such as phenylephrine. The composition of individual preparations and the recommendations for their use may differ.
When is Theraflu used?
Theraflu is a preparation that counteracts the symptoms of colds and flu, alleviating the course of accompanying ailments. It can be used in the short-term (usually 3 or 5 days) treatment of disease symptoms. Products from the Theraflu family can be designed to combat general cold and flu symptoms, but some are directed against specific ailments (eg Theraflu Cough, Theraflu Cough or Theraflu Total Grip).
Po selected Theraflu preparations can be used in the event of symptoms such as:
- fever,
- sore throat,
- headache,
- obstruction of the nasal passages and sinuses,
- osteoarticular pain,
- muscle aches,
- chills.
Before using Theraflu, read the package leaflet and make sure which ailments it is intended for. Some measures should only be used in the presence of specific sets of symptoms (e.g., Theraflu Total Grip, Theraflu ComplexGRIP). Theraflu is suitable for adults, but regarding the possibility of administering it to children and adolescents, please refer to the manufacturer’s information accompanying the medicine.
Theraflu should not be used for longer than stated in the package leaflet. In the event of no improvement or deterioration of the patient’s condition, medical consultation is recommended.

Theraflu – the most important active substances
Theraflu, depending on the form (e.g. powder, capsules, syrup), may contain different active substances with different effects, including:
- paracetamol – a drug with an analgesic and antipyretic effect;
- phenylephrine – the substance affects the condition of the nasal mucosa, reducing its congestion and swelling;
- maleinian flag – has an antihistamine effect, reduces itching, sneezing and congestion of the nasal mucosa or sinuses;
- gwajafenezyna – an expectorant agent, indicated in the case of a wet cough, as it thins secretions and reduces the severity of cough;
- pseudoefedryna – Helps with stuffy nose and sinus discomfort, reducing nasal congestion and sinuses, and nasal swelling;
- ascorbic acid (vitamin C) – vitamin C deficiencies may appear in the course of colds and flu, especially at the beginning of the disease.
When choosing Theraflu, be sure to read its composition (active substances and excipients) in order to avoid taking the selected preparation if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Information about active substances is also important if the patient is taking other drugs with a similar composition – with ingredients such as paracetamol, there may then be a risk of overdosing.
Theraflu – contraindications
Contraindications to the use of Theraflu are listed in the leaflet attached to the specific product. They may therefore differ from formulation to formulation. Examples of situations in which Theraflu should not be used include:
- hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation;
- pregnancy and breastfeeding – if in doubt, ask your doctor;
- taking certain medications, especially those containing the same active substances as Theraflu, but also others, e.g. tricyclic antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, some antibiotics, furazolidone, beta-blockers or sympathomimetic drugs;
- age may be a contraindication – some preparations are not suitable for children or adolescents;
- severe liver or kidney failure;
- hyperthyroidism;
- heart diseases;
- diabetes;
- hypertension;
- glaucoma with a closed angle of filtration;
- phaeochromocytoma.
Therefore, you should make sure that the contraindications mentioned above apply to you before using Theraflu for colds, flu, sinuses or coughs.
People taking Theraflu should pay special attention to the risk of overdosing with paracetamol. Do not use larger daily doses of the product than recommended or take them in too short intervals of time. In addition, drugs with paracetamol should not be used simultaneously with other agents containing the same active substance.

Theraflu ExtraGRIP – sachets
One of Theraflu’s available characters is Theraflu ExtraGRIP in the form of a powder for oral solution. One sachet of the drug contains the following active substances: paracetamol (650 mg), phenylephrine hydrochloride (10 mg) and phenyramine maleinate (20 mg). The main indications for use of the preparation are symptoms typical for flu or colds, especially fever, chills, headaches, bone and joint pain and muscle pain, as well as nasal obstruction, sneezing or excess nasal discharge.
Theraflu ExtraGRIP can be used by adults and adolescents over 12 years of age. The content of one sachet is dissolved in a glass with hot water and drunk after cooling. The next sachet can be taken after 4-6 hours, a the maximum daily dose is 3 or 4 sachets of the preparation. The dosage should be modified according to the doctor’s recommendations or the content of the leaflet in the case of, inter alia, liver disease and kidney failure.
Theraflu Max Grip – sachets
Another preparation for short-term relief of flu and cold symptoms is Theraflu Max Grip in sachetscontaining paracetamol (1000 mg), phenylephrine (10 mg) and vitamin C (70 mg). It helps with headache and throat pain, fever, and sinus and nasal obstruction accompanied by pain. The measure is not given to children under 12 years of age.
Do not take more than 4 sachets of Theraflu Max Grip per day – the powder dissolves in hot water, you can add cold water or sweeten it before drinking. There are 4- or 6-hour intervals between consecutive portions, and it is advisable to consume the lowest effective dose of the drug.
Theraflu Colds – sachets
The sachets also offer Theraflu Colds with paracetamol (500 mg) and pseudoephedrine (30 mg). Like other paracetamol remedies, it helps relieve pain and relieve fever, and it also reduces the discomfort of a stuffy nose and pressure in the sinuses. Theraflu Colds can be used by adolescents from 15 years of age and adults.
A single dose of Theraflu Colds is one sachet dissolved in a cup (250 ml) of hot water. During the day, no more than 4 servings of the preparation are taken in order to relieve symptoms of colds or flu.

Theraflu Total Grip – capsules or sachets
Theraflu Total Grip preparation is available as:
- hard capsules – 500 mg of paracetamol; 6,1 mg of phenylephrine; 100 mg of guaifenesin;
- sachets – 1000 mg of paracetamol; 12,2 mg of phenylephrine; 200 mg of guaifenesin.
Play Theraflu Total Grip can be used for up to 3 days by adults and adolescents from 16 years of age for symptomatic treatment of flu and colds, when all of the following symptoms occur:
- fever and / or mild to moderate pain;
- stuffy (blocked) nose;
- wet cough with productions.
Theraflu Total Grip is not intended for adolescents aged 16-18 years with a body weight less than 50 kg.
The recommended dosage for hard capsules is to take 2 capsules at a time (with or without food). The next dose is allowed after waiting from 4 to 6 hours, but no more than 6 capsules should be taken during the day. Reaching for Theraflu Total Grip sachets, one should be taken every 4-6 hours – it is allowed to take 3 sachets a maximum of XNUMX hours.
Theraflu ComplexGRIP – syrop
Theraflu ComplexGRIP is a syrup for adults only (suitable for use from the age of 18). It is used to relieve symptoms of flu and colds, including chills, fever, headache and sore throat, a wet cough with phlegm, and a stuffy nose. The preparation can be used only when the patient has the following symptoms: wet cough, nasal congestion, pain and / or fever.
The active substances contained in 30 ml of the syrup are paracetamol (500 mg), phenylephrine (30 mg) and guaifenesin (200 mg). The safe and recommended use of the drug ensures its effective action and reduces the risk of overdosing the ingredients of Theraflu. During the day, you can take no more than 4 doses of the drug – 30 ml of syrup every 4-6 hours.
Theraflu Cough – syrup
Theraflu Cough syrup is intended for symptomatic treatment of cough of various origins. The active substance is butamirate (butamirate citrate), a non-opioid cough suppressant. The product is suitable for adults, adolescents and children from 3 years of age. The dose of the syrup is also selected depending on the age, which we measure with the measuring cup attached to the product:
- adults – 4 x 15 ml daily;
- adolescents from 12 years of age – 3 x 15 ml daily;
- children 6-12 years old – 3 x 10 ml daily;
- children 3–6 years old – 3 x 5 ml daily.

Theraflu Zatoka – sachets
Theraflu products include preparations aimed at people who struggle with symptoms related to sinuses. One is Theraflu Bay, a drug in sachets each containing 650 mg of paracetamol and phenylephrine hydrochloride (10 mg). The indications for use are headaches resulting from problems with sinuses, painful obstruction of the nose and sinuses, as well as swelling and congestion of the mucosa. In addition, the drug had a soothing effect on the symptoms of colds and flu.
This medicine should not be given to adolescents under 12 years of age. Theraflu Zatoka dosing recommendation is the content of one sachet at a time. In order to relieve symptoms, consecutive servings can be taken at appropriate time intervals (every 4-6 hours), but the dose of three or four sachets a day should not be exceeded.
Theraflu Zatoki Max – coated tablets
There are also options for treating sinus symptoms Coated tablets Theraflu Bay Maxcontaining 500 mg of paracetamol and 30 mg of pseudoephedrine. Do not give this medicine to adolescents under 12 years of age. The indications for taking the drug include flu symptoms or symptoms accompanying a cold, headache, throat and muscle aches, fever, stuffy nose and sinuses, runny nose, and pain associated with paranasal sinusitis.
Theraflu Zatoki Max is administered orally – two tablets are recommended at a time, and if necessary, the same dose can be administered after 4 to 6 hours. The maximum daily dose of the preparation is 8 tablets (up to 4000 mg of paracetamol and 240 mg of pseudoephedrine).
Theraflu – side effects
If you experience side effects while taking Theraflu, tell your doctor or pharmacist. Side effects can be relatively mild, e.g. somnolence, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth.
Some reactions in the body mean that you must stop taking the medicine immediately and see your doctor. This applies, inter alia, to allergic reactions, anaphylactic shock, angioedema, sudden fever, breathing problems, severe skin reactions, hives, itching, red skin, ulceration, bleeding, bruising or yellowing of the eyes or skin, indicating liver problems.
