The youth is not moving. As much as 80 percent leads a sedentary lifestyle

A recent study by the World Health Organization says that most adolescents are not physically active enough, putting their current and future health at risk. This is true for both girls and boys.

The WHO study included 1,6 million students aged 11 to 17. It showed that over 80 percent schoolchildren all over the world do not move enough, ie less than an hour a day. The experts took into account not only the exercises performed at home and during PE lessons, but also recreational games, active work at home, walking and cycling. 

Girls turned out to be less active in almost all countries. The problem affects as much as 85 percent. teenager. However, in relation to boys, the difference is not large – 78%. boys move less than the norm provides.  

‘Urgent policy measures are now needed to increase physical activity, in particular to promote and maintain girls’ participation in physical activity, said study author Dr Regina Guthold of the WHO. 

How is Polish youth doing? 

There are countries where the situation is dramatic. The proportion of young people who lead a sedentary lifestyle in Korea, the Philippines, Cambodia and Sudan exceeds 90%. It is best in Bangladesh, although more than half of teenagers (66,1%) do not move there too little. Poland, with the result of 78,8%, was slightly below the average. Surprisingly, we are overtaken by the United States, where 72 percent is insufficiently active. youth. 

Movement saves health – more and more evidence

WHO recalls that the health benefits of active lifestyle in adolescence include improving cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, strengthening the bones and heart, and improving metabolism. Thanks to the activity, the risk of excessive fat gain is reduced. This is especially important because the whole world is struggling with the obesity epidemic. There is also growing evidence that exercise has a positive effect on cognitive development and socializing. These benefits pay off in adulthood.
