Minister Adam Niedzielski announced today that the group of people recommended for the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will be expanded soon. People 18+ will probably be able to get a second booster in a month. This is significant news, as scientists’ opinions on the second booster dose have so far been divided. – But there are special situations (…) and here a cocooning strategy should be implemented, that is, vaccinating people from the environment of risk groups – says the immunologist and pediatrician Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski.
- From July 22, the fourth dose is recommended to people aged 60+ and patients with impaired immunity at least 12 years of age
- Probably in September this group will be joined by other adult Poles (18+) – this is the result of today’s announcement of the Minister of Health
- Dr. Grzesiowski: “Scientists’ opinions on the fourth dose for younger people are divided”
- However, the expert draws attention to situations when the adoption of a second booster is advisable. He lists specific groups of people who should get vaccinated whenever possible

“Everything indicates that the 4th dose for a wider population, at least 18+, will be available at the beginning of September” – wrote Adam Niedzielski on Twitter today.
At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Health announced that 750 people have already signed up for the fourth dose. people from 60+ and 12+ groups with reduced immunity. «As many as 300 thousand of them took the vaccine »- we read in the minister’s entry.
Let us remind you that the second booster has been served in Poland since April this year. and was recommended for the elderly, over 80 years of age. The preparations given as part of the fourth dose are Pfizer and Moderna.
Dr. Grzesiowski: “there are special situations”
We asked Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, an immunologist and pediatrician. The expert pointed out that the issue of administering the fourth dose to younger people is not clear-cut.
Scientists are divided on the fourth dose for younger people. On the one hand, there is no data so far that vaccination of younger people reduces the incidence of severe complications because they occur rarely, on the other hand, immunity decreases more slowly, which means that at this point the benefits of giving the fourth dose are not confirmed.
But there are special situations, for example when younger people look after the elderly, there are health care workers, uniformed services – and here a cocooning strategy should be implemented, i.e. vaccinating people from the environment of risk groups. This option is also provided for in the announcement of the Minister of Health of July 21, 2022.
At the same time, Dr. Grzesiowski appeals for peace, because protection against Omikron after vaccination does not completely expire, even if we vaccinated some time ago.
“The good news is that thanks to immune memory, we still have protection against Omicrons if no more than four to five months have passed since the last dose. If someone has only taken two doses, they should take the third dose now, and if they have had three doses of the vaccine, if they are over 60 years old or, regardless of age, have a chronic disease that can cause immunodeficiency, take the fourth dose as soon as possible. dose – indicates.
