The woman is allergic to… exercise

When 33-year-old Kasia tells someone about her condition, she is usually treated with indulgence. People think it’s absurd to be allergic to exercise, and the woman just made up a great excuse not to go to the gym. Meanwhile, a longer session on the treadmill could kill her.

Many people who find it difficult to pull themselves together and go to the gym joke that they are allergic to it. But for Kasia Beaver it is not a joke, but an everyday reality. With each intense physical exertion, her face swells, turns red, and Kasia is in danger of anaphylactic shock. In order to stop the reaction, the woman must take antihistamines.

Kasia suffered an attack for the first time just after turning 20, before her first pregnancy. As her eyes swelled the most, she was convinced it was a reaction to makeup. Acute allergy appeared quite often, so Kasia quickly stopped using eye shadow.

One day Kasia got allergic to the gym, which she went to with her mother. Her face swelled so much that her mother decided to take her to the emergency room. There she was given antihistamines.

After this incident, the girl began to visit doctors regularly to diagnose what she is allergic to. For many years, doctors could not find any logical cause of attacks. Eventually Kasia realized that exercise was what triggered an acute reaction. All it took was a short run, intensive cleaning or… sex with my husband – and the swelling appeared immediately.

Eventually, she was diagnosed with exercise-induced angioedema. In her case, the factor which triggers the attack is an increased heart rate, which leads to an increase in the permeability of the blood vessels.
