Wioletta, 24, was 14 weeks pregnant when the car she was driving was stuck in a tree. She then suffered a brain injury and has not regained consciousness until now. Recently, however, she became a mother. All thanks to the work of specialists from the Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital – Research Institute in Łódź.
Prof. Krzysztof Szalik, head of the Gynecology, Reproductive and Fetal Therapy Clinic of the Polish Mother’s Memorial Institute, believes that saving a child can be viewed in terms of a miracle. The child may have died right after the accident because the mother was undergoing very complicated neurosurgical operations.
– The pregnant woman was in a vegetative state. She looked at us with one eye. And although there was no contact with her, the eye said that she wanted us to save her child – said prof. Krzysztof Szaflik, head of the Gynecology, Reproductive and Fetal Therapy Clinic of the Institute of Polish Medicine.
Doctors monitored the condition of the patient and the child for 14 weeks. Only after this time did they decide to bring it to a solution. Specialists had to perform a caesarean section. The girl weighed only 850 g. Initially she was breathing with a respirator. Only after 84 days, her condition was so stable that she could leave the hospital. Currently, she is under the care of her grandmother.
– It’s actually like writing a very long story. There comes a moment when we put the last dot and, like the author, we breathe with relief because we are satisfied with our work – summed up Mariusz Grzesiak, acting head of the clinic.
The child’s mother was taken to a facility in Częstochowa, where coma patients are awakened.
