The washing machine drum does not spin, what to do

If the drum is not spinning in the washing machine, urgent action must be taken. There may be several reasons for this malfunction. To find them, you need to find out at what stage the washing machine broke down: when starting with laundry or at the spin stage.

Consider how to identify the signs of a malfunction and do the repair yourself.

Drum does not spin during washing

Why does the drum not rotate during washing? Here are the main reasons:

  1. Imbalance.
  2. Drive belt problems.
  3. TENA failure.
  4. Motor failure (brush wear).
  5. Problems with the tachometer (engine speed controller).
  6. The electronic module burned out.
  7. Faulty wiring.
  8. Entry of a foreign object.

There are many reasons: how to figure out what happened in your case and what to do with the washing machine, read below.

Doesn’t spin when pressed

The washing machine did the washing normally, but the drum does not spin during the spin cycle. Why is this happening? Here are some reasons:

  • The No Spin program is on, or a delicate wash has been selected. In this case, the laundry is wrung out minimally, or not wrung out at all.
  • If there is a blockage in the drain system, the water does not drain after washing, and the spin cycle cannot start.
  • An imbalance has occurred. The load of laundry has been exceeded, which has led to an imbalance. Things got off to one side, the work stopped.
  • The pressure switch is faulty, which sends information about the amount of water in the tank to the main module. If there is no command, spinning will not start.
  • Malfunctions in the control board. Perhaps the wiring burned out or the control triac burned out.

A similar malfunction can happen with any brand of washing machine: Indesit, Ariston, Bosch, Zanussi and others. It is necessary to react in time and fix the problem.

The machine does not turn, but draws water

Why did the machine take on water, but the drum does not rotate? Immediately drain the water and try turning the drum by hand. If it does not spin by hand, it is probably jammed.

What caused the problem:

  • The drive belt has broken or jumped off, which has wound around the pulley. This is what caused the jamming.
  • An object is stuck between the tank and the drum. It could be any items that fell out of pockets.
  • The drum bearing has deteriorated, so it cannot rotate normally.

In most cases, bearings fail due to prolonged use, overloading the drum, and also if the stuffing box has never been lubricated.

Washing machine hums but does not spin

You start the program, the washer began to buzz, as if taking in water, but the drum does not spin. Let’s see why this happens:

  • When an engine breaks down. Perhaps the brushes have worn out, the lamellas have worn out, or a short circuit has occurred. This can only be verified by inspecting the motor.
  • When a bearing is stuck.

CM does not work, the drum does not spin

The washing machine may not work at all for the following reasons:

  • Malfunction of the electronic module. As a result, the engine does not receive a command to start.
  • TENA failure. If the heater breaks down, the machine can not only wash in cold water, but also not work at all. Why is this happening? With the formation of scale and overheating, the heating element may explode and block the operation of the AGR.

CM works but does not spin

If you do not know why the washing machine is working, but the drum is not spinning, here are a few reasons:

  • The washing machine filled with water, but the drum does not rotate. Most likely, the heating element burned out.
  • Triac malfunction on the module that is responsible for the operation of the engine. In this case, the program starts, but the motor does not receive commands to rotate. Electric brushes could also burn out.

How to fix the situation

What should be done to troubleshoot? Consider the problems and their solutions.

Imbalance

To eliminate the imbalance, you need to stop the program. If there is water in the tank, it must be drained. To do this, unscrew the drain filter – it is located behind the hatch under the front panel. Read more on how to do this below.

Now open the hatch door and distribute the laundry evenly over the drum.

Blockage in the system

To remove a blockage in the drain filter, proceed as follows:

  1. On the front panel below, open the small hatch by depressing the latches.
  2. Unscrew the filter, drain the water into a container and clean the filter of debris.
  3. Install the item in place.

Belt problems

In order to check the drive belt, you need to remove the back panel of the CM. Proceed in sequence:

  1. Remove the plug from the socket, turning off the power to the machine.
  2. Shut off the water supply and disconnect the intake hose (be careful, there may be water in it).
  3. Take a screwdriver, unscrew the screws on the back cover.
  4. After removing the panel, inspect the belt. If it frayed or fell off, it must be replaced. In case of wear, a new element is put on.
  5. Put the belt first on the small pulley of the electric motor, then, while scrolling the drum pulley, put the belt on it.
  6. Installation completed, screw the panel back into place.

Heating element failure, foreign object

These two faults can be fixed at the same time:

  1. Remove the back cover as described above. In some models, the heating element is located behind the front panel: Samsung, Bosch, Siemens.
  2. Under the tank is a heating element. To check it, you need to connect a multimeter to the contacts and measure the resistance.
  3. When you are convinced of the malfunction, disconnect the wires from the heater.
  4. Unscrew the central nut (not completely) and push the bolt inward.
  5. Prying the edges, pull the element out.
  6. Now through the hole you can check if there is a foreign object inside, and get it out.
  7. Install the new heater in reverse order.

Engine problems

You don’t have to put the panel back in because the motor is also on the back. Inspect its wiring for damage.

Then you need to remove the engine to inspect the brushes and other parts.

  1. Disconnect motor wires.
  2. Loosen the mounting bolts.
  3. Pull out the motor and its brushes. If they are worn out, you need to install new parts. The same applies to lamellas and windings. They are checked last, if everything is in order with the brushes.
  4. Examine the tachogenerator. It is attached to the engine housing. If defective, replace.

Burned out main module

It is difficult to repair electronics on your own, but it is possible to inspect for damage.

  1. Loosen the two screws on the back and remove the top cover.
  2. Remove the powder dispenser tray by pressing the lock in the center.
  3. Unscrew the bolts securing the control panel.
  4. Release the latches and remove the panel from the CMA housing.
  5. Inspect the wiring for integrity. Release the clamps and, having disconnected the panel, inspect the control board.
  6. If burnt parts are visible on it, it means that repair or replacement is required.
  7. You can replace an element. Replace the new module, connect the connectors, and secure the panel to the chassis.

All parts in the washing machine can be replaced on their own, but not everyone can cope with their repair. If you are not confident in your abilities, contact the service center.
