The washing machine does not drain water: how to find and solve the problem

Ordinary washing turned into stagnation of water in the tank? What could have happened, and why does the washing machine not drain the water? The reasons for the lack of water drainage can be many factors, and this is not necessarily a complex breakdown. Basically, after diagnosing, you can troubleshoot yourself.

How to detect a malfunction and resume the operation of the automatic machine, read the article.

Causes and symptoms of malfunction

How the user can understand that a malfunction has occurred:

  • Pay attention to the first signs of damage. For example, water drains more slowly than usual.
  • The washing machine does not drain water at all.
  • The wash cycle runs as usual, but when it comes to draining, the system freezes.
  • The machine drains the water after one wash.
  • After draining, spinning does not start.
  • After the main wash, the water drains, after rinsing – no.

You can also notice a strong noise: the machine will hum, as if draining waste water.

Why did it crash:

  1. Wrong mode set.
  2. Clogged drain pipe, hose, sewer.
  3. The pressure sensor has failed.
  4. The drain pump is broken.
  5. The electronic board burned out.

What to do if the washing machine does not drain water

If the drain in the washing machine does not work, first of all check the correct connection and other external factors. To do this, you do not need to disassemble the washer.

Proceed in sequence:

  • Check if the program is installed correctly. In cases where “Manual” or “Night mode” is selected, as well as washing delicate fabrics, the machine may stop after rinsing – before spinning. Cancel the mode and start draining.
  • Check the drain hose. If it is bent or a blockage has formed in it, then the water will not be able to go down the drain.
  • Both the sewerage system and the siphon (if the washing machine is connected through it) could become clogged. To check this, just disconnect the hose and direct it to the sink, then run the drain. If water flows out of the hose, then the cause is in the sewer. You can clean it with special tools or call a plumber.

If you have tried all the methods, but the drain does not turn on, restart the washer by unplugging it from the mains for 15-20 minutes. Then run the drain program again.

None of the remedies work? It is necessary to proceed to the diagnosis and repair of internal parts.

Draining occurs, but not completely

The washing machine draws water, but does not completely drain. The reason is a blockage in the drain system. Start checking with the drain filter.

  • Open the small hatch at the bottom of the front panel. To do this, release its latches.
  • Substitute a flat container and unscrew the filter.
  • After draining the water, clean the filter from clogging.

In some models, the CMA filter is fixed with screws. Therefore, first of all, unscrew the screws, and then the filter.

It also happens that the drain filter does not open because the drain plug does not unscrew. She sticks to the body. You can soften the connection with WD-40 or remove the filter along with the pump.

If the filter is clean, proceed to further checks. Now you need to check if the drain pipe is clogged. This could be the reason why the water does not drain completely.

You can get to the nozzle through the bottom of the washer, the back or front panel. It all depends on the brand of the washing machine: Indesit, Samsung, Ariston or Zanussi.

  • After you get to the pipe, unscrew the bolts of its fastening.
  • Open the clamps with pliers and disconnect the pipe from the tank to the pump.
  • Feel the pipe with your hands, checking if its channel is clogged.
  • Replace it after cleaning.

SMA hums while draining

If the machine, trying to drain the water, buzzes and crackles, the cause may be in the pump. To check its performance, you need to look at the impeller.

  • Shine a flashlight into the hole in the drain filter.
  • Turn on the spin mode and check if the impeller is spinning.
  • If the impeller does not rotate, you need to completely check the pump. It is located next to the drain pipe.

To remove the pump, unscrew the mounting bolts and disconnect the wiring. Now inspect both the impeller and its motor. It happens that foreign objects are wrapped around the impeller. If everything is clear, ring the pump with a multimeter to make sure that there is voltage to it. Wiring is also inspected.

If the pump does not give any indicators, it needs to be replaced. You can buy a new part in a specialized store, naming the brand and model of the washing machine.

The pump runs continuously

Is the drain pump running and not turning off? The failure occurred in the electronic control board. Her elements are out of order, so she does not give the pump a command to stop working.

For inspection, you need to remove the control board from the case:

  • Disconnect the washer from electricity.
  • Remove the top cover by unscrewing the two screws on the back.
  • Pull out the dispenser tray by pressing the latch in the center and pulling it towards you.
  • Loosen the screws behind the tray and on the opposite side of the panel.
  • Release the latches.
  • Disconnect all wires from the board and remove it from the panel.
  • Look for burnt parts on the surface.

Do not try to repair electronics yourself, it is better to trust professionals.

Faulty pressure switch

When the pressure switch pipes become clogged or it completely fails, the module does not receive information about the amount of water in the tank. Therefore, it does not give a command to pump out water. By removing the top cover, you can disconnect the sensor tubes and clear them of blockage. Or remove the pressure switch by unscrewing the fastening screw and install a new device.

Perform regular blockage prevention by periodically cleaning the drain system from debris. Also rinse the dispenser tray under running water.

Inspect all things before loading, clearing pockets of foreign objects. Place clothes with small parts in special laundry bags.

Now you know what to do if the machine does not drain water or drains it continuously. Use our tips to get the machine back in operation.
