The use of horse sorrel in traditional medicine
Horse sorrel is a plant of the buckwheat family, widespread in central Russia and the European part of the CIS. All parts of the plant, from roots to seeds, have healing properties. It is used in both folk and traditional medicine for the treatment of many diseases.
Application of horse sorrel
To use sorrel as a medicine, it is harvested in the fall. Ripe seeds of the plant and its rhizomes are dried in a well-ventilated dark room and stored in closed glass jars.
Horse sorrel is a low toxicity plant. Before starting treatment, consult your doctor for any contraindications.
The use of horse sorrel in traditional medicine
Based on the results of research by scientists from different countries, horse sorrel is successfully used by specialists in various fields of medicine.
Patients with first and second degree hypertension are advised to drink liquid horse sorrel extract for 3 weeks. A persistent decrease in pressure appears within 1,5–2 hours after taking 60 drops of the extract. This medicinal property of the plant was confirmed by L.A. Shvedenko, Doctor of Science. back in 1952.
Clinical trials conducted in 1965 by Professor V.I. and in 1991 by V.F. Korsun, revealed the effectiveness of ointments with chirazorbine in the practice of treating psoriasis. The use of 1–2% of a useful ointment in combination with ultraviolet radiation already on the third day leads to a decrease in redness on psoriatic plaques. After a month’s course, recovery occurs in a third of patients, the rest have visible improvements.
Horse sorrel root extract is a part of preparations for the treatment of sinusitis, sinusitis and diseases of the upper respiratory tract. The most famous drug is Sinupret.
The drug “Bodiprost”, which contains an extract from the root of horse sorrel, is successfully used in the treatment of inflammation of the prostate gland.
Horse sorrel in folk medicine
A decoction of horse sorrel root is used as an external remedy for various skin diseases such as abscesses, allergic rashes, cracks in the anus, etc. A decoction in milk is also used to heal long-lasting wounds. For the treatment of scabies, sorrel roots are mixed with pork fat and applied to the affected areas.
There are cases when epicondelite was completely cured with the help of alcohol tincture from sorrel. The leaves of the plant can be used as a styptic for shallow cuts and abrasions.
Before harvesting sorrel as a remedy, carefully study its appearance from photographs and descriptions in scientific literature.
In small doses, decoctions and infusions of horse sorrel are used as an astringent for diarrhea. With a strong concentration of the plant, it has the opposite effect and is used as a laxative. Long-term use of preparations based on horse sorrel is addictive to the active substances of the plant, and the benefits of using sorrel come to naught and can be harmful to health.
