The twins fused with bellies were separated

For the first time in history, Texas specialists managed to successfully separate Siamese twins fused with chests and bellies. The operation, which lasted 26 hours, was successful and the children are currently in the intensive care unit.

Knatalye Hope and Adeline Faith Mata were born in Texas last April. Already during the first ultrasound, the attending physician informed the parents that their little daughters would be born as Siamese twins fused with their bellies and chests. This method of fusing is extremely serious and so far no surgery has been successfully carried out to separate such twins.

The girls had many organs in common – lungs, liver, small and large intestines, pelvis and pericardial sac. Despite this, the parents decided to take the risk and the sisters would undergo an operation to separate. The first preparations began in October. Children were implanted with expanders, which were to enlarge the surface of their skin, needed to cover the wounds created after the separation.

In early February, the girls underwent surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital. The procedure lasted 26 hours! Twelve surgeons, six anesthesiologists and eight nurses participated in the operation. The split was carried out as planned, without any unexpected complications.

At the moment, the girls are in the intensive care unit. In the future, they will have to undergo a few more operations, but none of them will be so serious.
