When white “pollen” appears on the arms, many of us reach for well-known brands of anti-dandruff shampoos. This visible ailment keeps many people awake at night, because it is difficult to get rid of it once and for all. Dandruff comes and goes, and that’s because we get rid of its symptoms first of all, and not the most important thing: the cause of the disease.

Getting to the causes of dandruff is not the easiest thing to do. We usually carry out the treatment on our own using pharmacy and drugstore specifics. Dandruff is a very common ailment, occurring in almost half of adults. Its basic symptoms include:

  • Itch,
  • peeling of the scalp,
  • Numerous redness and irritation.

It occurs more often in men than in women. Exfoliation can have different degrees of advancement, from milder (which is manifested primarily by dry skin) to recurrent and extensive. It is least common in the elderly and in children. Although it is not a disease that affects our health and is not life-threatening, it is a very troublesome condition. For many people, it causes discomfort, lowers self-esteem and negatively affects the quality of life, causing stress and worries.

The condition may have its source in internal and external factors. External factors include lifestyle, diet and environmental influences, and internal factors include any abnormalities in the immune system, hormonal system (which is why we often suffer from dandruff in adolescence) and neurological. The main culprits of dandruff are Malassezia yeast.

Anti-dandruff shampoo – which one to choose?

Scientific research proves that shampoos are the best way to fight dandruff. Based on observations, it was established that any creams, foams and solutions will not give such effects as shampoo. The composition of the appropriate specificity of this type should mainly include:

  • Selenium Sulfide – it is used not only in anti-dandruff shampoos, but also in antifungal drugs. This ingredient fights yeast infection, which is the most common cause of dandruff. In addition, it has an anti-exfoliating effect and reduces skin itching. Do not reach for selenium sulphide if you have an exudate or inflammation on your head. It is also not recommended for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 5 years of age.
  • Zinc pyrithione – this ingredient also works on the cause of dandruff, not on the symptoms themselves, because it fights the yeast that causes the condition. After washing with this substance, it remains on the head for quite a long time, thanks to which it works for a long time.
  • Substances that reduce the symptoms of dandruff, not its cause – these are ingredients that may be more effective in the case of ailments that are not caused by yeast, but, for example, by stress and hormonal changes. These types of substances include: sulphur, urea, tar, salicylic acid and ichthyol.
