5-year-old Igor died after a standard tonsillectomy. The doctor who performed the procedure was suspended in the Provincial Complex Hospital in Konin, where he operated. Despite this, he still works in other institutions.
Removal of the tonsils, or tonsillectomy, is a surgical excision of the palatine tonsils. This procedure is usually performed when the patient has recurrent tonsillitis, occurring three to six times a year. The procedure is quite common, and complications after it are extremely rare. Usually these are recurrent respiratory diseases, rarely bleeding from the mouth or nose. Death as a result of this surgery does not actually happen.
5-year-old Igor just died after tonsillectomy. The boy’s mother reported on the course of events in an interview with TVN 24. Despite the fever and malaise, Igor was discharged from the hospital. The attending physician assured his parents that the boy would recover faster in a safe, home environment. Unfortunately, there was a hemorrhage two days after the surgery. As Mrs. Małgorzata said, the boy “splashed blood”.
An ambulance was immediately called, and desperate parents rushed to meet her. However, the child could not be saved. Death was a result of choking blood.
At the moment, parents are investigating whether their child’s death was the result of a doctor’s error. Laryngologist prof. Witold Szyfter admitted that a child with a fever should not be released from the hospital.
The doctor who performed the procedure was suspended in the Provincial Integrated Hospital in Konin, where the operation was performed. Despite this, he still works in other institutions. It will take several months for experts to make an opinion as to whether a malpractice has been committed.
