Nature, probably, blinded her to the highest order. The beauty of this girl was perfect, sensual and attractive. She was not afraid of human envy, which quietly stepped aside at the first appearance of a wonderful creature.
This remained in the memory of Gia Carangi – a unique supermodel, the first brunette among the crowd of blondes on the world catwalk. Her bright, short and tragic fate still excites true connoisseurs of female beauty, complaining that no one was able to save Gia from the fatal step, from the vicious passion that led her to death. Carangi is widely believed to have staked out a number of famous supermodels from the 90s, including Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford. The fates of the latter were successful, without any shocks and difficulties. The same cannot be said about Gia. The imprint of a lonely childhood, when none of the parents cared about her, remained for life. Maybe for this reason, Gia hastened to break out of the house in order to get rid of the feeling of loneliness that haunts her. And in New York, the girl, one might say, met a good fairy. In the person of Wilgemina Cooper, a former model who owns her own agency. Gia conquered her with her kind of wild, primitive beauty, in which there was something demonic and attractive. Even in jeans and a baggy T-shirt, Carangi looked spectacular and catchy. And throw a fashionable evening dress on her, adorn her swan neck with expensive jewelry, she would immediately turn into a fairy-tale princess with sad deep eyes.
With the light hand of Wilgemina Cooper, Gia easily, without apparent effort, builds a career as a model. And the very first photo of a naked Karanja blows up respectable America. Of course, there was a lot of noble indignation, noise, but even the most ardent moral slickers could not help but admit one thing: Gia in this “dress” was simply delightful! The famous photographer Chris Vonenhem subtly captured the character and uniqueness of the model, her ability to transform herself into any creative images imperceptibly. Later he would reflect this talent of Karanja in subsequent works with her. Soon, Gia vied with each other to invite popular fashion magazines to the covers, and modeling agencies signed lucrative contracts with Carangi. Glory, huge fees, successful work are already familiar to the girl. Behind her, the status of a recognized star of the world podium is being quickly strengthened. It seemed that there was nothing and no one to stop the rapid flight to creative heights. Until Gia visited the famous Studio 54 one day. In New York, despite its wild popularity, this fashionable club enjoyed a bad reputation. More than free morals, no matter how bitter it may seem, were to the liking of the supermodel. Even in her youth, she became addicted, in her opinion, to light illegal drugs. And here, in a fashionable club, this good was in abundance. As you might expect, the use of illegal substances has become a permanent habit. Further events in the life of Karanja begin to resemble a monotonous picture. Not a day, not an hour, Jia cannot do without illegal drugs. The star model’s career is rapidly collapsing, agencies are breaking contracts with her. Karanja’s patroness, Wilgemina Cooper, unexpectedly dies. This event completely destroyed Karanja’s soul.
The girl now finds oblivion and solace only in vicious passion. The supermodel’s bank accounts melted in the blink of an eye: everything was spent on the purchase of illegal substances. There is, perhaps, no point in describing the terrible details of her terrible fall to the bottom of life. In fairness, Gia was trying to break out of this death trap. But there was no longer the strength and special desire to fight for his former life. This was eloquently evidenced by her last work in the spring of 1982, when she was still a popular model. Gia Carangi was shot for the cover of the magazine, hiding her hands so that the injection marks were not visible. After that, absolutely all fashion magazines and agencies terminated contracts with Gia and blacklisted her. The former supermodel was left without work and livelihood.
In 1986, Gia was admitted to the hospital with severe pneumonia, and then doctors diagnosed her with a terrible diagnosis – AIDS. Karanji never left the hospital. All the last days, her mother was on duty near the hospital bed – sadly, but it was in the tragic, terrible moments that mother and daughter became close. Kathleen Carangi protected her daughter from everyone – annoying guests, former friends, journalists, she did not let anyone near the ward. The disease disfigured the unfortunate girl so much that Kathleen was terrified that cunning paparazzi, having learned about Gia’s condition, would hunt for photographs. Karanji’s mother wanted her daughter to be remembered as she was in the best years of her glory – brilliantly beautiful. Although the doctors made disappointing forecasts and literally counted the days, Gia continued to dream and make plans. She wanted to make a documentary by her own example about the terrible dangers of illegal drugs. But all this remained a dream … In November 1986, Gia passed away. She was only 26 years old.
The film “Gia” was made about her tragic fate, the main role was played by Angelina Jolie. According to critics, the picture would be completely unsuccessful and boring if it were not for the acting talent of the Hollywood star. Angelina extended the film, making it spectacular and touching. According to Jolie’s frank admission, some trials in the life of Carangi were in her difficult fate.
