Diabetes is an insidious disease. It can remain silent for many years. However, sometimes our body may have seemingly harmless symptoms that may indicate that we are developing type 2 diabetes. One of them is changes in our nails. Unfortunately, they are easy to ignore. See what you should especially pay attention to.

  1. Type 2 diabetes grows very slowly. It may be preceded by insulin resistance. Very often it does not cause any symptoms
  2. The most common symptoms of diabetes include: excessive thirst, frequent urination, sudden weight loss, as well as irritability and difficulty concentrating. However, there are also seemingly trivial symptoms of this disease that are easy to overlook
  3. Type 2 diabetes can also manifest itself through changes in the nails. These include ringworm, Terry’s nails or Beau’s lines

Type 2 diabetes can develop in our body for many years. It may be preceded by insulin resistance. Both of these diseases are associated, inter alia, with disorders of insulin secretion. Once pancreatic enzymes are exhausted and unable to produce it, blood glucose levels begin to rise dangerously. This is when the first symptoms of type 2 diabetes may appear. Here are some of them:

  1. excessive thirst
  2. increased hunger,
  3. frequent urination,
  4. recurring infections of the genitourinary system,
  5. sudden weight loss
  6. irritability,
  7. problems with concentration,
  8. weakness,
  9. slow wound healing,
  10. deterioration of vision,
  11. swelling
  12. gingivitis,
  13. recurring infections.

As we mentioned, there are also symptoms of type 2 diabetes that are very easy to overlook. They appear, among other things, on the nails.

How does diabetes manifest itself in nails?

It should be noted that diabetes is not the only disease that can manifest itself on our nails. Changes in them may also suggest that we are deficient in certain vitamins and minerals (e.g. magnesium, silicon and iron). It can also herald thyroid or kidney problems.

So how do you know if nail changes are related to diabetes? Below are some symptoms that we should pay attention to.

  1. Terry’s nails, i.e. a characteristic change in the color of the nail. In this case, the distal part of it is pink, while the proximal part is white. Moreover, the nail plate becomes dull and cloudy.
  2. onychomycosis – this disease is very common in diabetics. First of all, it attacks the toenails. Sometimes the changes appear on only one of them, and sometimes all the fingers are affected. How is it manifested? Our nails become brittle and brittle. Their plate very often turns yellow-brown. Toenails with fungus can also be very thick and can be difficult to trim.
  3. Beau’s lines – this is another change that may suggest that we are struggling with diabetes. How to recognize it? It causes changes in our nails in the form of transverse grooves or depressions. They are usually located parallel to each other. They can be seen primarily on the thumbs and big toes. Beau’s lines are caused by the growth of the nail plate stopping.

If you notice any of these symptoms you should consult your doctor. Only in this way are you able to check if your body is developing type 2 diabetes.
