Data from the COVID Syndrom Tracker app, used by two million Britons, suggests that some symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection, including fever, fatigue and anosmia, are related to genes.
Scientists analyze the symptoms of COVID-19 reported by twins
According to the latest data of scientists from King’s College London, genes are 50 percent. responsible for the worsening of key COVID-19 symptoms, including fever, fatigue, and loss of taste and smell. Some people may be more susceptible to coronavirus infection than others, according to research, because of their genes.
A team of researchers analyzed data recorded on the COVID-19 Symptom Tracker app, used by over 2 million people in the UK, including 2600 twins from TwinsUK, the UK’s largest twins organization. People who have downloaded the application report their symptoms voluntarily.
The researchers used information about the twins’ health and symptoms they reported. They also took into account whether the twins lived in the same household.
“The idea was to look at the similarities and differences in the occurrence of symptoms (or lack thereof) between identical twins, which share 100 percent. their genes and fraternal ones who share only half of their genes “, said Prof. Tim Spector, one of the scientists running the venture.
The scientist explained that the data collected from the twins allow them to find differences in their symptoms. Some of the symptoms can then be ascribed to genes and some to external factors. What did the scientists observe?
Genes are responsible for some of the symptoms of COVID-19
In a study that has not yet been reviewed, it was found that genetic factors correspond to approx. 50 percent. for the worsening of COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, delirium, and loss of taste and smell.
Hoarseness, coughing, loss of appetite, chest pain, and abdominal pain were not associated with genes.

The researchers thanked the British twins for reporting information about their symptoms. “Thanks to their dedication, we are able to carry out key research very quickly,” said Prof. Frances Williams of King’s College London.
Knowledge of the genetic link between COVID-19 can provide scientists with important clues to developing treatments for the disease and help identify high-risk groups.
