Health Minister Adam Niedzielski recently said that the summer wave of coronavirus infections will reach its peak in mid-August. A moment later, however, he reassured that there were fewer patients than predicted. However, looking at the weekly report of the Ministry of Health, it is difficult to calm down. Only in the last seven days, as many as 19 thousand people fell ill with COVID-21. 973 people. And that’s only officially. How many people are tested and ill “privately”? Experts are under no illusions: 10, maybe even 20 times more.

  1. The health ministry today presented a weekly report on coronavirus infections. In the last seven days, 19 people have entered the official COVID-21 register. 973 people. 73 patients died

The causes of the spike in infections in the middle of summer

The rise in coronavirus infections in the middle of summer may come as a surprise, but it was inevitable. Several factors contributed to this. First, the spread of Omicron subvariants, primarily BA.5, which is highly infectious and able to bypass the immune response.

Second, the expiration of immunity to SARS-CoV-2, both in vaccinated and unvaccinated people who have contracted COVID-19 and thus acquired protection.

Thirdly, the effects of loosening (or actually almost completely eliminating) covid restrictions, including the most basic sanitary and epidemiological principles, such as wearing protective masks and maintaining social distance. This lulled our vigilance and made us an easy target for the coronavirus attack.

The omicron goes around and keeps mutating

The coronavirus variant that accounts for nearly all current infections is Omikron. It was first detected in November 2021 and it was responsible for the fifth wave of infection that spread across all continents at the turn of last year and this year. Since then, no other variant of SARS-CoV-2 has managed to dominate it, while Omikron itself is developing towards greater infectivity and even better resistance to our immune response. This is why the virus is so easily infected today.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19 – get tested. At Medonet Market you can buy:

  1. COVID-19 Rapid Test – Antigenic Test for Self-Control
  2. COVID-19 antigen test – SGTi-flex COVID-19 Ag
  3. Home COVID-19 Ag SGTi-flex cartridge test
  4. COVID-19 – Rapid Saliva Antigen Test

Among the Omicron sub-variants, BA.5 is the best “performer”. How is it different from other coronavirus lines? It is certainly easier to catch it, even if we are vaccinated with three doses. Is it very dangerous? It depends.

People who have received vaccines (minimum two doses, preferably two doses + booster) are certainly safer, protecting to a large extent against severe infection and death (and to a lesser extent also against the infection itself). The unvaccinated are completely deprived of this protection, especially if they have not had COVID-19 and have had no contact with the virus that would allow them to produce antibodies.

The fact that Omikron BA.5 is mostly mild at home (cold or flu-like symptoms) does not mean, however, that it does not cause serious conditions and complications. In hospitals, there are patients with this variant who are fighting for their lives and others who are losing this fight. There are also many people who struggle with long covid, i.e. a number of cardiological, neurological, pulmonary and other ailments, resulting from even a mild course of the disease.

For this reason, doctors and experts continue to appeal: let’s be vigilant, let’s not forget that the pandemic continues and the coronavirus continues to infect and devastate our health. Let’s vaccinate and protect ourselves from contamination, avoiding crowds, maintaining social distance, wearing face masks where distance is not possible, and caring for hand hygiene.

Can I get vaccinated with the fourth dose?

From April, you can get a second booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. In spring, the fourth dose was “unblocked” for the oldest citizens (80+), and from July 22, this group was extended to include people over 60 years of age and immunocompromised patients aged min. 12 years.

However, as the head of the Ministry of Health announced today, in a month’s time, all willing adults, i.e. people over 18, will probably be able to apply for a second booster.

“Everything indicates that the 4th dose for a wider population, at least 18+, will be available at the beginning of September” – wrote Adam Niedzielski on Twitter.

As he added, 750 have already signed up for the fourth dose. people, 300 thousand. of them already have their vaccination behind them.
