Most vulnerable to BA.5 infection in Poland. “Vaccination is the only chance”

Seniors are still the group most exposed to the fatal consequences of the infection. This is especially worrying given the spread of the BA.5 mutation, the most infectious of the coronavirus mutations to date.

On July 22, registration for the fourth dose of the vaccine for people at least 60 years old (and immunocompromised people over 12 years of age) began. A second booster has become a necessity with the new wave of infections and declining antibody levels. According to the information of the Ministry of Health, 274 have signed up so far. Poles (out of 4,3 million).

Vaccination with the fourth dose is one thing. Still a serious problem is the large percentage of seniors who did not take even the first dose. There are about 200 of them. However, the problem concerns our entire society. According to ECDC data, at least the first dose of vaccination was taken by 60,3%. population, the first booster dose – 32 percent.

Meanwhile, 46 vaccinations against COVID-922 were carried out on the last day.

Finally, it is worth recalling the recent words of the vaccinologist, Dr. hab. Ernest Kuchar, M.D. «An old proverb says: Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you want peace, prepare for war). We all want the next wave of coronavirus to be mild, but that doesn’t mean we have to passively wait for the situation to develop. You have to prepare for it (…) Vaccinations are the only chance. The new variants are so contagious that the restrictions, especially if not strictly followed, will not do much. So let’s forget about lockdowns, let’s focus on vaccinations »- he emphasized.
