In swabs collected by ICM IGC in recent days from residents of Poznań, all positive COVID-19 samples contained only the Omikron variant. “Detailed sequence analysis of the identified viruses showed that there are four Omikron sub-variants in the material tested,” informs Prof. dr hab. n. med. Andrzej Pławski, head of the Innovative Medical Center of the Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

  1. According to the GISAID database, Omikron is responsible in Poland for 98.6 percent. coronavirus cases
  2. In Poznań, in samples collected by the Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, this variant is responsible for 100 percent. illnesses
  3. The BA.2 sub-option, which aroused the interest of virologists some time ago, accounts for nearly half of all the cases
  4. According to prof. Michał Witt will soon be the dominant sub-variant across the country

Omicron and its four sub-variants

«In the first decade of January this year. The Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań informed that in the material studied at the Institute’s Innovative Medical Center, the percentage of cases of infection with the variant B.1.1.529 of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, called Omikron, was 97%. This week, the analysis of 95 virus samples isolated at the IGC PAN was once again performed using the next-generation sequencing method »- informs the Center and adds that in the samples four Omicron sub-variants were detected.

«The most common sub-variant BA.2 in our material, first appeared in the Philippines in November 2021. In Poland, the first cases of BA.2 infection were observed at the beginning of this year, on January 30 it accounted for approx. 9 percent. infections. In the samples tested at the IGC PAN, the BA.2 sub-variant currently accounts for the vast majority of identified SARS-CoV-2 viruses.. There is a noticeable increase in the frequency of this sub-option in a short time, which is also observed in other European countries, eg in Denmark it is already almost 90% ».

According to IGC PAN, the BA.2 sub-option was present in 47 percent. of the analyzed samples, sub-variant BA.1 in 31%, sub-variant BA.1.1 in 21%, and sub-variant BA.3 in 1%.

Sub-option BA.2 will be dominant in Poland

—The percentage found in the IGC PAN research can be considered representative for the Polish population in the last week of February. It should be predicted that the BA.2 sub-option will soon dominate the SARS-CoV-2 virus pool in our country, says the director of the Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. dr hab. n. med. Michał Witt.

According to data collected by IGC “at the molecular level, a whole series of changes in the amino acid sequence of the spike protein are observed in the BA.2 sub-variant, possibly increasing the affinity of the virus for the ACE2 receptor”. It is mainly thanks to him that the virus particles penetrate into human epithelial cells. As recently confirmed by the World Health Organization, this translates into a clearly higher infectivity of the BA.2 sub-option. It poses a particular risk to unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated people. In fully vaccinated people, the infection is relatively mild.

Innovative Medical Center at the Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences

The Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences opened the COVID-2020 Laboratory in April 19. Most of the team then decided to work as volunteers to fight the pandemic. In June 2021, the Laboratory became part of the Innovative Medical Center. So far, the Laboratory has tested nearly 80. patients. In December 2021, as much as 32 percent. all tests for coronavirus from NFZ referrals in Poznań were performed at the Innovative Medical Center at the Institute of Human Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The facility performs RT-PCR tests to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus and antigen tests. It has the qualifications of a medical entity and is entered in the list of COVID-19 Laboratories of the Ministry of Health. Since September last year, the RT-PCR test can be performed free of charge with a referral from a doctor under the National Health Fund

In addition to the diagnostic tests performed, the Laboratory analyzes the structure and variability of SARS-CoV-2 virus genomes, and the results are entered into global databases.. In September 2021, the Innovative Medical Center introduced the first test in Poland to assess the cellular immune response against SARS-CoV-2 and the quantitative test of IgG antibodies in the blood.
