In general, for the first time the name itself ” shake ”appeared in 1885 to denote an alcoholic cocktail that had a much more specific recipe than its modern“ descendant ”.
History of Milkshake
Is it possible to find a person who would not like a milkshake? Both a cute girl in a summer dress and a brutal biker in a “cosus” – everyone definitely wants to sip this drink, which can be prepared according to a classic recipe, and you can experiment.
It would seem that “milkshake” is easy to prepare, but in fact the story of its creation is much more interesting than it may seem at first glance.
In general, the very name “milk shake” first appeared in 1885 to denote an alcoholic cocktail, which had a much more specific recipe than its modern “descendant”. That cocktail included egg-legs – a kind of sweet refreshing drink, which was based on milk and eggs. It first appeared in Scotland, but has now become popular throughout Europe and the New World, and it is associated with Christmas.
So, the first milk shake is an egg-leg, to which whiskey was added. How do you combine? The tart alcoholic drink pleasantly shades the sweetness of the milk. But, of course, this drink is far from a modern milkshake, so there is no continuity here – just a coincidence of names and circumstances!
The first modern milkshake appeared in the 20s in the United States. In this country, pharmacies were notable for the fact that you can buy there not only drugs. In modern American pharmacies, you can sometimes even buy cigarettes in special machines!
So, in 1922 you could also buy chocolate malt there. The manager of a network of pharmacies called Walgreens tried to improve his prescription.
Ingredients he used are the following:
- Two servings of ice cream.
- One serving of regular milk.
- One serving of chocolate drink made from milk powder.
And so the classic recipe for milkshake appeared. The manager’s name was Ivan Coulson, but his contribution is only the basis for the success of this cocktail.
The fact is that whipping ice cream by hand is quite difficult, and in the yard of the 20s, and there are no special combines yet. More precisely, it was not, because it was for whipping ice cream for a milkshake created the world’s first electric blender! Of course, now the invention of Stephen J. Poplawski is used much more widely, but the fact remains: if the engineer was not a fan of milkshake and did not develop the concept of an electric blender just to make this cocktail, the modern kitchen was not like now!
Moreover, Ray Kroc, the seller of these blenders, who promoted them on the market, managed to interest the founders of the McDonald’s restaurant chain with this invention. Becoming one of the owners of the franchise, Ray began to promote blenders around the world!
So the next time you enjoy a milkshake, remember what a contribution such a seemingly simple cocktail has made to history. By the way, his taste and innocent appearance made him a real weapon. So one of the assassination attempts on Fidel Castro, which was prepared by the CIA, was connected with the addition of poison to this drink! But we, of course, advise to follow the classic recipe and add only safe ingredients.
