The son of Magdalena Stępień and Jakub Rzeźniczak died on July 28 in Israel. The child suffered from a rare tumor – malignant rhabdoid thumor liver, i.e. a malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver. The boy survived 376 days.

Magdalena Stępień, model and former partner of the footballer Jakub Rzeźniczak, informed in January on Instagram that their six-month-old son Oliwier suffers from a very rare liver cancer. In another post, on February 3, she explained that the histopathological examination showed that this tumor was malignant rhabdoid thumor liver, czyli malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver.

«One of the rarest, very aggressive and resistant to treatment malignant neoplasms – sarcoma of soft tissues, and in our case of the liver. In Poland, Oliwier is probably the third child with such a diagnosis. From the information that reached me, I learned that the chance to cure My Little Warrior in Poland is only 2 percent! » – Stępień wrote.

On July 28, Jakub Rzeźniczak informed about the death of Oliver. The boy lived 376 days and passed away in Israel.

«Oliwierk’s disease unfortunately spread quickly and took our Angel here in the Holy Land, in Israel. We feel unimaginable pain, but also enormous gratitude for each day of his life. These days were exactly 376. The funeral mass and Oliwierek’s last farewell will be held in the chapel at the cemetery at ul. Wojska Polskiego 59A in Oleśnica, August 1 (Monday) at 14.00 p.m. We invite all who want to pray with us the Holy Rosary from 13.40 pm to the chapel. Thank you for all the good that flowed from you. We are very grateful for that. At the same time, we kindly ask the media to respect the time of our mourning. We very much need peace, quiet and prayer now ”.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver – what is it?

Malignant rhabdoid tumor belongs to soft tissue sarcomas. It is a very aggressive form of cancer. Previously, it was described as one of the variants of Wilms’ cancer, but more detailed research recognized it as a separate disease entity. Rhabdoid tumor occurs mostly in children, affects mainly the kidneys and liver, and can also appear in peripheral nerves, the brain and other soft tissues throughout the body.

The incidence of this disease is very low. Only a few cases of this cancer have appeared in Poland. In the United States, the prevalence is estimated at three cases per million. The survival rate in children under the age of 3 is 11-20%.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver – symptoms

In the case of the youngest patients, diagnosis is not easy, because children are not yet able to express what is wrong with them. Therefore, a lot depends on the mindfulness of parents.

  3. palpable thickening under the skin of the abdomen
  4. yellow skin or eyes
  5. back pain
  6. fever
  7. itch

  11. anemia (anemia, which is a low red blood cell count)

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver – causes

The immediate cause of the development of a malignant rhabdoid tumor is unknown. It has a genetic basis, its formation is related to a mutation in the SMARCB1 gene (its other names are SNF5L1 or INI1), encoding a protein that is part of the SWI / SNF complex. Less frequently, the occurrence of this neoplasm is associated with a mutation of SMARCA4, a gene encoding another protein included in the SWI / SNF complex.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver – diagnosis

If a rhabdoid liver tumor is suspected, the doctor may order the following tests:

  1. blood tests, including liver function markers and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test
  2. ultrasound examination
  3. X-ray examination
  4. computed tomography
  5. magnetic resonance imaging
  6. biopsy – taking a piece of neoplastic tissue for research

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the liver – treatment

There is no standard treatment for this cancer. Treatment includes surgical removal of the tumor (as far as possible), as well as multimodal and aggressive chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
