The smallest pacemaker

Two patients from the UK underwent surgery to implant the world’s smallest pacemaker. The device could be a breakthrough in the field.

The new pacemaker is small (about the size of an aspirin tablet). Thanks to this, it can be introduced into the body through the femoral artery. Then it is attached to the heart with a kind of wings. The entire procedure takes only half an hour. The next day the patients could be discharged from the hospital.

This is a big leap as the previously used starters were roughly the size of a matchbox. It was necessary to implant them under the collarbone.

The starter can operate without interruption for up to 10 years. According to specialists, it is much more effective and safe than its predecessor, because it eliminates many components that were most often damaged.

The operations performed are part of clinical trials. The introduction of the new generation of starters will be possible only after their completion, which will take place in a year at the earliest.
