The size of the ovaries is normal in women by ultrasound
The size of a woman’s ovaries is an important indicator that may indicate normal functioning or dysfunction of the reproductive system.
Normally, the size of the ovaries can fluctuate within the permissible error, depending on the hormonal background and the day of the menstrual cycle, but serious differences may indicate the development of an inflammatory process or the presence of a tumor.
The size of the ovaries is normal in women
In healthy women of active childbearing age, the size of the ovaries may differ slightly depending on overall body size and hormone levels. The ovaries are paired organs, however, they are not characterized by absolute symmetry, and normally the parameters of the ovaries may differ by several millimeters.
Strong asymmetry or significant increase indicates pathological processes, such as:
inflammation,
cyst formation
tumor changes.
If the deviation in size is determined to a smaller side, one can assume an early depletion of ovarian function.
It is possible to determine the exact size of the reproductive organs with an ultrasound examination. In this case, not only the length and width of the ovary are important, but also its volume.
The size of the ovaries by ultrasound (normal):
Length – from 2 to 3,7 cm.
Height – 1,8 to 3 cm.
Depth – 1,6 to 2,2 cm.
Volume – from 4 to 10 cubic cm.
Since the normal size of the ovaries has a fairly wide range, it should be borne in mind that other factors must be taken into account when making a diagnosis. Ultrasound examination to determine the parameters of the ovaries can be performed both transabdominal and transvaginal – in the latter case, more accurate information can be obtained.
How to prepare for an ultrasound scan to determine the size of the ovaries?
In order for the information to be informative, an ultrasound examination should be carried out 5-7 days from the beginning of the menstrual cycle, that is, immediately after the end of menstruation. The method of research will be determined by the doctor, but in any case, you will need some preparation:
1-2 days before the examination, exclude from the diet foods that cause fermentation and increased gas production: legumes, rye bread, carbonated drinks, etc. Excess gas in the intestine can cause distortion of the data.
Take any sorbent drug the day before your test to reduce the amount of gas in your intestines.
Be attentive to your health and regularly undergo examinations by a gynecologist!
