On the night of February 24, Our Country attacked Ukraine. Soon after, the army managed to take over the Chernobyl power plant, where in 1986 one of the reactors exploded. The Polish National Atomic Energy Agency informs about the current situation in the zone, referring to the Ukrainian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (SNRIU). The increase in radiation, which was recently reported in the media, was due to the movement of a significant number of heavy military vehicles.
- In 1986, when the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded
- Currently, the power plant is in hands
- The recent increase in radiation is not a result of damage to the radioactive waste storage facility, inform the Ukrainian services
- The National Atomic Energy Agency constantly monitors the level of radiation over Poland. There is no need to worry

The situation in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone
As reported by the National Atomic Energy Agency on its website, the Ukrainian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (SNRIU) issued two notifications under the international system of early notification of radiation emergencies (USIE) regarding the state of nuclear safety and radiological protection in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

«SNRIU informs that the storage facility for uranium ore processing and the Radioactive Waste Management Point (PZRV) in the Exclusion Zone has not been damaged. All facilities in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone were seized by the troops of the Federation on February 24.02.2022, 17 at 00:XNUMX p.m. From February 25, 2022 (from 10:00), nuclear facilities and other facilities of the Special Purpose State Enterprise, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (SSE ChNPP), are operated by the operating personnel of the ChNPP – the SNRIU informs »- reads the release.
«The Ukrainian Nuclear Regulatory Authority confirmed the exceeded control levels of the gamma dose rate recorded by radiation monitoring in the Exclusion Zone. The dose rate in the Exclusion Zone results, in particular, from the emission of gamma radiation from the cesium isotope (Cs-137), the main source of which is the surface layer of the soil. The presumptive cause of the indicated dose rate increase may be a partial disturbance of the topsoil due to the movement of a significant number of heavy machinery and military vehicles – PAA writes.
The situation in Poland – there is no threat
The National Atomic Energy Agency also informs that the radiation situation in Poland remains normal. »- we read in the announcement.» Data from the Permanent Monitoring Station (PMS) are published on an ongoing basis on the Agency’s website.
The agency also informs about the radiation situation on Twitter.
Poles buy Lugol’s fluid. Unnecessarily
There is information about Poles buying Lugol’s liquid from pharmacies. It is an aqueous solution of iodine and potassium iodide. It is used to disinfect undamaged skin surfaces or minor abrasions and scratches. Lugol’s liquid, available in Polish pharmacies, is not suitable for consumption.
After the Chernobyl explosion in 1986, Polish citizens, including children, received a properly prepared Lugol’s fluid. The goal was to protect against radioactive iodine 131.
– It could have penetrated primarily into the milk, and from there to the thyroid glands of children – said in an interview for “Polityka” prof. Zbigniew Jaworowski, the late specialist in the field of radioactive contamination. – We had the fullness of spring then, so farmers were already releasing cows to the meadows contaminated with radioactive iodine from Chernobyl (after the catastrophe, grazing cattle was forbidden – editor’s note). Therefore, the most important message that I wanted to convey to the authorities was: the children must be given stable iodine as soon as possible to protect them from thyroid cancer – said the scientist.

Years later, prof. Jaworowski admitted that it was not a good decision. As she said in an interview with Medonet, Dr. Natalia Piłat-Norkowska from the Lower Silesian Oncology Center in Wrocław, in the years after Chernobyl, the expected epidemic of radiation-related cancers was not observed. It turned out, however, that drinking Lugol’s liquid could have had other negative side effects for Poles.

– After the disaster, it was recommended to eat the so-called Lugol’s fluid to saturate the thyroid with normal iodine before it can absorb the radioactive iodine isotope that was then released into the atmosphere. There are reports that this could lead to an increase in the amount of anti-thyroid antibodies responsible for an autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s disease, the drug said. Natalia Piłat-Norkowska.
