The Significance of Nightmares in a Pandemic

We understand the meaning of the most common dream motives.

During the period of quarantine and self-isolation, we increasingly have disturbing dreams. This is completely normal. This is how our brain processes negative information and unprocessed emotions. Somnologists deciphered the main motives of dreams.

In Europe, the quarantine began earlier, so the phenomenon of nightmares has been studied there for a long time. Those complaining about their bad dreams were asked to record them on a special broker.

Recent experiments conducted by scientists from Cardiff University even before the COVID-19 pandemic began, showed that the sleeping person’s brain does not bother too much writing scenarios of “bad dreams.” This was evidenced by the dreams of more than 300 volunteers, who wrote down what they could remember. Somnologists analyzed the plots, correlated them with real life. And as a result, we found out: more often than others, nightmares visit people who depend on something or on someone, are incompetent in something, are not sure and suppress their experiences.

The same was confirmed by the results of recordings of nightmares of people during the pandemic. Somnologists studied the recurring motives of the nightmares and gave them a transcript.

Walking naked down the street

Plot: you calmly walk around the city or come to school / work in the morning and notice that you are not wearing any clothes. At all! Everyone is looking at you, pointing fingers. You are ashamed and embarrassed.

Interpretation: you feel defenseless and vulnerable. Subconsciously, you are afraid of something and expect betrayal, setup or criticism. It also indicates low self-esteem.

The wave is covering you, you are drowning

Plot: the wave, like inevitability, covers you, and you cannot run away and wake up from fear and despair.

Interpretation: you have put on your shoulders an unbearable burden, you are afraid that you will not cope with it. A wave is a strong emotion that you cannot handle. Unrequited love, hatred, resentment …

Teeth, hair, body wounds fall out

Plot: you look in the mirror and see that you have no teeth, no hair, or your body looks completely unattractive due to the fact that it has no wounds, no legs or arms.

Interpretation: you have received or will receive a task that is too tough, something that is difficult to cope with. The body shows through the damage that it will be very difficult.

Forgot your child or pet

Plot: in a dream, you discover that you went on vacation, to the country house and forgot your child or pet at home. You feel guilty and anxious.

Interpretation: Forgotten kids and pets mean opportunities that were not used. Look around, perhaps you do not notice something or someone very important to you.

Failure

Plot: you are dreaming of a school that you graduated from a long time ago, but for some reason found yourself in it again. Right among the kids. You are trying to do the test, but you don’t remember anything. Or you go out to sing on stage, but there is no voice …

Interpretation: you are under constant pressure and are very tired of it. As a result, you have not prepared for something, have not completed something, have forgotten about something.

Space chase

Plot: you are being chased by monsters, aliens, wild or unusual animals. They try to catch, eat, kill, commit violence. You can’t run fast, your legs have become wadded.

Interpretation: you have some talents and abilities that you just can’t realize. For example, restrictions imposed by the authorities or simply a lack of self-confidence interfere.

In the trap

Plot: in a dream, you were covered with earth or a house collapsed, and you were in ruins. Or trapped in a room, in a hospital, or in a prison. You can’t get out, although you see a way out. The body is not listening to you. Or even paralyzed.

Interpretation: you are in a difficult situation, you cannot get out of something, with something to cope with. This can be both in a psychological sense and in a physical sense: you need to go somewhere, and the digital pass limit has been exhausted.

How to deal with nightmares

For fewer nightmares, try:

  • disconnect from all information resources at least a couple of hours before bedtime;

  • meditate or pray;

  • do yoga;

  • read a calm, kind book.
