The series «Knock on my door»: four male psychotypes

Turkish series have long occupied a special place in world cinema. “The Magnificent Age”, “Black Love”, “Korolok — a singing bird” — these paintings have become cult in our country. There are also newer series that have attracted special attention from the audience. In particular, «Knock on My Door», which was bought to be shown in more than 85 countries. The audience liked it primarily because of the characters. What does their personality say about their relationship with their parents? How can you explain their actions? The psychologist says.

Today, serials are discussed on a par with good new books. And the psychological and literary analysis of the main characters can quarrel old friends or, conversely, show that we are on the same wavelength. Together with psychologist Anita Ivkina, we can take a closer look at the psychotypes of the main characters of the series “Knock on My Door”.

We begin our cinematherapy session: take a closer look at which of the characters can be friends, and who is simply created for romantic relationships? How do they solve problems with colleagues, in relationships with girls, create creative projects? Perhaps, among the psychotypes of the heroes of the series, you will find yourself or your friends.

Serkan Bolat

The image of this hero is the embodiment of authority and self-confidence. From the first seconds when he appears in the series, we understand that this man is not used to losing and wants to keep everything under control. Having built a successful business in the field of architecture, he has earned a reputation as a cold and calculating businessman who has no room for error. And each of his appearances in the office takes place against the backdrop of the panic of all employees.

Psychological analysis:

Serkan carefully hides his feelings even from himself and lives in a world where there is no place for emotions and vulnerability — it looks like a protective mechanism of the psyche, when a person deliberately avoids a serious relationship, so as not to get burned, not to experience heartache.

This happens when, in childhood, a child is faced with a ban on the manifestation of feelings and emotions, with coldness and a lack of maternal love. Then he has to hide his true self under the armor, which, like an invisible protection, creates a distance with everyone who tries to get close to him. Why? Because rapprochement can bring to the surface past traumatic experiences and the pain of experiences that the hero could once experience. At the same time, the series shows more than once that Serkan is trustworthy and you can rely on him.

Engin Sezgin

Being Serkan’s best friend and business partner, Engin is his opposite. Does not hide his emotions, rarely can say «no». His strengths also cannot be called planning and decisiveness. And he is constantly in search of «the woman of his dreams.»

Psychological analysis:

Engin is not able to stoically withstand crisis situations, since this requires good internal supports that allow him to survive, not lose heart and believe in himself. It is these qualities that are laid down in early childhood by our parents. In adult life, they help answer the question “What do I really want?”, help to face difficulties and overcome them, relying on their own strengths.

Qaan Karadag

The cruel and ambitious Kaan is the owner of another architectural company and Serkan’s main competitor. This hero is ready to do anything to achieve his goals. His image seems to show us what a person can become, forgetting about the laws of honor and friendship.

Psychological analysis:

Even in early childhood, a child’s “super-ego” instance is formed, which is responsible for the principles of humanity and humanity, establishes prohibitions and laws by which a person lives in the future, building relationships with others. And in this regard, the figure of the father and his role in the life of the child are very important — he lays the foundation for the construction of this instance and acts as a guide to the adult world.

Erdem Shanghai

This hero is very different from others, if only because he lives with the motto: “Leave today’s work for tomorrow. Or have someone else do the work for you.» It is not surprising that, even as Engin’s assistant, he is more of a hindrance than a help. And generally wreaks havoc in the office.

Psychological analysis:

Erdem is a person with a kind character. However, he has a poorly established connection with reality and what is happening here and now, the reaction to current events seems to be a little behind him. It is difficult to rely on such people, because even with a sufficiently high intelligence, they can easily (and without malicious intent) forget to fulfill a promise. Or make it so that the rest will have to deal with the consequences of their rash actions for a long time.
