There are several risk factors for a heart attack that medical professionals have taken into account for many years, such as poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking, but also those that are beyond the patient’s control, such as age, gender and family burden. Researchers at the University Medical Center in Groningen in the Netherlands believe that Healthcare professionals should add the person’s blood type to this list when assessing cardiovascular risk.

About 9 percent higher risk of heart attack in people with blood group other than 0

A team from the Netherlands analyzed studies that reported participants’ blood types and rates of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, heart disease, heart failure and death from heart disease. The data came from 1,3 million adults.

In the analysis of all coronary diseases, the team identified 771. 113 people with a blood group other than 0 and 519 thousand 743 people with blood type 0.

While the study was not designed to pinpoint the mechanisms underlying the association between blood group and cardiovascular risk, researchers have identified some reasons for this association. People with a blood group other than 0 have a higher concentration von Willebrand factor (an essential component of the blood involved in the process of its clotting), which previous studies have linked to the body’s tendency to clot. Besides, people blood type groups other than 0 – especially those with blood group A – tend to have higher cholesterol levels, which is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
