The right reflexes to help baby eat better

Introduce each food one after the other in the baby’s plate

Between 4 months and 6 months, food diversification begins. Even though breast milk, or infant milk, remains a central food for your baby (with at least 500 ml per day), it needs new inputs to develop well. We will therefore start with the finely ground vegetable purees and well-cooked fruit compotes. It is important to start introducing plants one by one so that baby can identify their flavors and recognize them. By advancing step by step in the discovery of taste, you allow him to refine his preferences and limit the risk of food blockage growing up.

It’s important not to force your baby to eat

If it happens that your toddler refuses the food that you offer him, do not insist, you risk pointing him out. Food should be a pleasure in his eyes and not a punishment. Know that in general, sometimes it takes 8 or 9 times before a food is well accepted by our child. Stay patient! On the other hand, as our baby grows, if the refusals start rather around 18 months, it can be about “food neophobia”. This almost inevitable stage of refusing certain foods (which he ate before) can appear around 18 months and can last for several years, up to 5-6 years. Do not hesitate to seek advice from his pediatrician to resolve the situation.

Familiarize your child with food

To help our child enjoy their meals, we try to help him learn more about the ingredients we use. How? ‘Or’ What ? By taking him to shop with us at the market, at the baker’s, at the cheese factory. We can also install it in his high chair by our side when we cook or, around 18 months, allow him to participate in the preparation of meals, at the height of its capabilities. For example, he can help us mix a cake batter with a wooden spoon, or pour a bag of chocolate chips into a cookie mix. You can also show him a picture book of foods to teach him to recognize and appreciate them.

Transmitting a taste for good things to your baby

In order for the good eating habits you give your baby to stay with him for a long time, it is important to cultivate in him the pleasure of eating tasty fruits and vegetables that enhance the true taste of food. To support you, Babybio, expert in organic infant nutrition for more than 25 years, develops good little jars and complete meals that highlight the flavors of our terroirs. Allow your baby to participate in meals

At each family meal, we reserve a place at the table for our toddler’s high chair. This should be positioned at the right height to allow it to be a real actor in this ritual.. Watching his parents eat, use their cutlery and enjoy tasting family dishes, he will want to imitate them. An excellent model to instill in him the pleasure of eating.

Put color and variety on your plate

If he likes carrots, so much the better! But that’s no reason to serve him carrot puree at every meal. Your baby needs to develop his taste learning by constantly discovering new foods. So follow the rhythm of the seasons to vary the fruits and vegetables, they will be richer in flavors, and the vegetable garden is full of varieties. To entertain and stimulate him, opt for colorful dishes and well-dressed plates. With food, do not hesitate to create funny faces or landscapes in your dish. You can also serve him his menus in compartmentalized trays and let him pick up whatever foods he wants to practice motor skills as he gets older.

Good to know : from 8-9 months, you can give baby his first melting pieces, be sure to respect his chewing rhythm.
