Typically, the refrigerator will sound only “on business” – when the user forgets to close the door or selects a certain function in some models. You quickly get used to such sounds and stop noticing them. But what if the sound of the refrigerator is heard all the time or occurs periodically even with the door closed? If at the same time the lights also flash or other “symptoms” appear, then there is a problem.
Next, we will look at why the refrigerator beeps, when to worry, and when not.
Refrigerator makes strange sounds – when it’s normal
There are times when he is disturbed by a squeak, but at the same time remains absolutely working. Then you need to exclude situations in which we are not talking about a breakdown:
- Check if how tight is the door refrigerator or freezer; something might be bothering her. It is possible that the body tilts forward, which provokes the spontaneous opening of the refrigerator. To solve the problem, you need to adjust the legs so that the body is tilted back a little.
- Maybe you decided to make a lot of frosts at oncecausing the temperature inside the refrigerator to rise. Unload shelves and chill food in batches or wait for the motor to reach the desired temperature. The standard freezer is designed to freeze 6 kg of food per day. If you have loaded 6 or more kg per day to keep the compressor running, it is better to turn it off for 1 hour every day of work.
- Worries brand new fridge alarm? Don’t worry: the equipment needs time to enter into a full-fledged operating mode and catch up with the desired temperature level in the compartments. For the same reasons, the refrigerator beeps after defrosting – in this case, it also needs to be given time to “accelerate”.
- Take a look in the freezer – if you have not defrosted the camera for a long time, then a lot of snow or ice could freeze in it. Frost or “fur coat” interferes with the sensor, so it receives incorrect data. Defrosting is required within 10-24 hours.
- Maybe “Super Freeze” started. In some models, this function turns off on its own after a few hours, while others require manual intervention and stop the mode.
If the sounds continue or, on the contrary, the equipment does not squeak when the door is open, the system has clearly failed. It will be useful for you to know the causes of its occurrence in order to promptly resolve the problem.
Why does the refrigerator beep
If you are ready to solve the problem, but the intrusive sound prevents you from concentrating and making a decision, turn it off until the specialist arrives. Usually the disable button is right on the user panel. It is designated differently in different brands and models: for example, ALARM or OK. In Bosch models, a speaker is drawn, and in Nord, a symbol of a crossed out bell. If you did not find such a button intuitively, turn off the power to the equipment and wait for a specialist.
Important! The sound indicates a problem. Therefore, it must not just be removed so that it “does not make you nervous”. After turning it off, proceed with self-repair or call the wizard so as not to bring the equipment to a major breakdown.
If the equipment not only squeaks when the door is closed, but also slightly cools the food, the reason for this may be:
- refrigerant leaks;
- breakdown of the temperature sensor;
- decompression or loss of motor performance;
- failure of the electronic board;
- malfunction of the defrost system;
- cooler failure;
- damper jamming;
- door seal wear.
These reasons for squeaking can also occur during normal operation of both cameras:
- The closed door sensor is broken.
- The integrity of the electronic scoreboard loop has been violated.
- One or more user panel buttons are faulty.
This is a short list of possible causes that cause a constant squeak. Next, we will deal with each failure separately and give brief instructions for action.
The refrigerator squeaks: what to do
Breaking | Sign | Cause | Elimination |
Refrigerant leaking. | In a refrigerator with one compressor, both compartments do not work, and in a model with two motors, one of them does not work. The compressor runs without shutting down or pauses too short to compensate for the lack of cold. In some models, the LED light is on or blinking. | The system is damaged, there is a gas leak. | Locate the leak, seal the system and charge the circuit with refrigerant. |
Temperature sensor failure. | In a model with one motor, both compartments do not freeze, with two – one. The light on the user panel is lit, the motor does not rest. In electronic models, the corresponding error code is lit. | Due to the breakdown of the thermistor in the compartments, it becomes warmer, which provokes the activation of the alarm. | Replace defective temperature sensor |
Compressor motor failure. | 1. There is a constant squeak, the motor is buzzing all the time. The compartments are too warm. There is light in the chamber. In addition to the above, indicators may flash on the panel. 2. A squeak is heard, the compressor tries to start, but fails. It is warm in the chambers, the motor housing can also be heated. 3. Compressor turns off for short periods of time or does not turn off at all. The compartments are not cold enough. In addition to the alarm, the red/yellow lights on the control panel may flash or light up. | Compressor component failure, decompression. | Change the motor to a new one. |
Board failure. | In a single-compressor model, there is no cold in one of the compartments; in a refrigerator with two motors, it is warm in both chambers. Failure is accompanied by a flashing red light. | The failure may be caused by a voltage drop. In rare cases, a factory marriage is to blame. Due to the high humidity in the room, the contacts of the board may oxidize. | Firmware or complete replacement of the module. |
Malfunction of the defrost system. | In the model with the No Frost function, the temperature regime is too high, the alarm works, the red lamp flickers. A layer of ice is cut on the evaporator. | One of the elements of the defrost system could break. | You need to replace the failed node. |
Fan failure. | Freezer with No Frost has a high temperature, the compressor is running, but the fan is not spinning. Worth a constant beep. In the “drip” models, the second chamber works as expected, and in the refrigerator with Full No Frost (full), both compartments do not work. | The chambers are not cooled, as a broken cooler does not distill cold air. | Change the fan (or the cooler motor, if it breaks). |
The damper stuck. | In systems with Full No Frost, the temperature in the compartments is too high, the ALARM lamp squeaks and flashes (Attention!). | Air does not flow from the freezer to the second compartment. This could also happen due to freezing of the damper or breakage of the reed switch. The cause of the problem may be the geared motor. | Repair or replace broken parts. |
Worn seal. | The squeak is heard constantly, and the door cannot be closed tightly. Compressor starts less often. In some models, the alarm LED is on. | The seal may be damaged if the operating rules are not followed, but natural wear is not excluded. Frequent opening and closing of the door and clapping especially contribute to rapid wear. | Check the tightness of the gum by laying a small strip of paper in all suspicious places. Where the seal does not stick to the body, the paper will fall out. Glue the gum or replace with a new one. |
What to do if the equipment freezes, but still interferes with a shrill squeak
Problem | Sign | Cause | How to fix |
The closed door sensor is broken. | The sound is continuous. The red LED is on or flashing. | The reed switch mistakenly “believes” that the door is open, so it constantly makes the refrigerator squeak. | Replace the sensor with a good one. |
The integrity of the electronic scoreboard loop has been violated. | In addition to squeaking, you may find that the electronic display does not work. A breakdown may be accompanied by a lack of light in the chamber. | Due to the violation of the integrity of the loop, the contact of the door with the control module is lost. | Replace screen cable. |
One or more user panel buttons are faulty. | It can be a start key or temperature controls. A squeak is heard periodically, the bulbs can glow randomly. | Due to broken buttons, the normal operation of the user panel is disrupted. | Replace buttons or the entire panel at once. Carry out maintenance of the wiring, clean and re-solder unreliable connections. |
Now you know all about why your refrigerator is beeping. Moreover, you know the causes of the squeak, and you know exactly what to do.
