The fourth wave of coronavirus in Poland is making itself felt more and more. The number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 is increasing.
The R index, or the reproductive rate of the virus, also increases. The R indicator tells how many more people can be infected by one person suffering from coronavirus. A value greater than 1 indicates that the epidemic is in an ascending wave, a value less than 1 indicates that it is waning.

According to the information we received from the Ministry of Health, the current R index is 1,33 for Poland. This is the highest value since the beginning of the current wave and, at the same time, the highest in the entire year 2021. Two weeks ago we wrote that its value had reached 1,22.
R indicator for voivodships – where is it the worst?
Detailed data on the R index for individual voivodships are not surprising. It achieved the highest values where the highest number of infections has occurred for several days. The first place in this ranking is Podlasie (1,47), followed by the Lublin region (1,41). At the same time, these are the provinces with the lowest percentage of fully vaccinated people.
About the situation in the province Lublin and Podlasie, says the latest map (from October 14) published weekly by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). These two voivodeships are the only ones marked in red.

On the other hand, the voivodeships with the lowest R index are Zachodniopomorskie (1,21), Dolnośląskie (1,22), Podkarpackie (1,23) and Małopolskie (1,23)
R indicator – a year ago it was the worst
According to the data presented on Twitter by the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski, the R index reached the highest value in October last year. It was then 1,55.
On the other hand, in March, when we were struggling with the third wave of the pandemic and the number of daily cases exceeded 35, the R index fluctuated around 1,2, which is much lower than in the record-breaking October.

R is underestimated?
According to many experts, the data on the R index presented by the Ministry of Health may be understated.
– I think that this R indicator is higher – said Prof. Andrzej Fal, head of the Department of Allergology, Lung Diseases and Internal Diseases at the hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration. -With such contagiousness, the one with the other somehow does not go hand in hand. The reddest are currently – as is the case in the Ministry of Health data – the following voivodeships: Podlaskie, Lubelskie and Świętokrzyskie, however, the value of R there even reaches the level of 1,8.
