The pump of the washing machine makes noise and cracks, what to do

There are no absolutely silent washing machines – even after proper installation, this technique will make certain sounds. And we will not talk about them at all, but about those sounds that appear in the work of the SM quite suddenly. Especially often, SMA owners are worried about the noise of the drain pump, which manifests itself when spinning clothes.

Let’s figure out why the washing machine pump is noisy and how to eliminate the hum with your own hands.

Why is the pump in the washing machine noisy and buzzing

Usually the drain pump makes noise, crackles and buzzes for the following reasons:

  • clogs;
  • breakage of a part;
  • clogged drain pipe;
  • blockage of the water drain hose;
  • clogged drain filter.

Fact. The pump is particularly noisy between rinsing and spinning. Cases of noise during draining of water after washing are not excluded.

To thoroughly understand why the pump buzzed, you will have to disassemble the washing machine a little. The work is simple, so you can do it yourself. Read more about disassembly and repair.

What to do to remove noise and crackling in the pump

To find the cause of the breakdown, you do not have to buy the entire power tool store, the main work is to unscrew and remove parts. Before proceeding with disassembly, take the time to check the drain filter. Its malfunction is the most likely cause of the noise.

Checking the drain filter

In popular brands of washing machines, such as LG or Ariston, this part is located in the lower right corner behind a small panel held by latches. You can remove it with your hands or help yourself with a screwdriver to press the latches. Now follow the instructions:

  • Take a rag or a small container to catch the water that runs out of the filter.
  • Turn the filter cover counterclockwise.
  • Take out the filter and inspect it.
  • Remove visible blockages with your hands, then rinse the part under a tap.
  • Install the element in place by screwing it tightly.
  • Run a test wash, pay attention to whether the rumble and noise are gone.

Take note! If the filter does not unscrew due to severe blockage, then the only way to get it: from the inside, not from the outside. In this case, the filter comes with the pump.

If the filter is clean and no debris was found in it, check the drain hose and pump further. In order to inspect them, disassembly of the washer body is inevitably required. The pump is removed differently in different brands of cars.

  • So, Whirlpool, Samsung, Algy, Ardo, Indesit and Ariston do not have a bottom cover, so it’s enough to put the SMA on its side to get to the pump.
  • If you are the owner of a Bosch, Siemens or AEG typewriter, then you can only get the pump from the front.
  • In SM “Zanussi” and “Electrolux” the pump is removed through the rear wall of the case.

Usually manufacturers provide the whole instruction in the user manual. But if the manual is lost without a trace, our photo instruction in the article “How to clean the pump in a washing machine” will come to the rescue.

After cleaning the pump, reinstall it or replace it with a new one if cleaning does not help. If the pump is still noisy after this, check other parts.

Checking the nozzle and hose

If the filter and pump are in order, and noise and hum still accompanies every wash, then blockages or breakages in the drain hose and pipe are likely. Having disassembled the SM housing, you need to remove the clamp holding the pump and hose (disconnect the other end of the hose from the sewer).

Remove the hose from the washer and rinse under the tap using a cable with a brush on the end. After cleaning the hose, install it in place, check the operation of the machine.

If this does not help, carefully pull off the drain pipe – it may be clogged, which is where the noise comes from. Despite the fact that the rubber nozzles are wide in diameter, debris can still accumulate in them, so pay attention to cleaning the nozzle. At the same time, inspect it for damage and leaks in order to quickly replace the part.

If you have done everything that we have suggested to you, and the car has not stopped making noise, you should contact a specialist.

Prevention of blockages so that the pump does not make noise

Prevention is needed so that extraneous noise does not arise due to foreign objects. You don’t have to do anything supernatural, just follow the basic rules for using the machine:

  • soften water with special means;
  • clean SMA parts from scale;
  • clean the filter after every 5th wash (or at least once a month);
  • sort clothes, check pockets.

We hope that now you know what to do so that the washing machine no longer makes noise. If you still have questions, you will find exhaustive answers to them in the video:
