Well-known orthopedist, head of the Department of Traumatic Surgery of the Musculoskeletal System and Orthopedics of the CMKP prof. Stanisław Pomianowski was demoted. He had a choice — dismissal or part-time and admission to a consultant position. The reason for the dismissal was a “loss of confidence”. Co-workers believe that this is retaliation for supporting colleagues during protests and criticizing the words of the CMKP director.
- At the Clinical Hospital of Prof. A. Gruca in Otwock, there has been a wage dispute for several months. The dismissal was planned as many as 44 specialists and 33 residents
- W last week, prof. Ryszard Gellert, director of the Postgraduate Medical Education Center, which is the supervisory body for the facility in Otwock, dismissed the head of the Department of Traumatic Surgery of the Musculoskeletal System and Orthopedics, prof. Stanisław Pomianowski
- Doctors from Otwock decided to send an open letter to the head of the CMKP with an appeal to reinstate the current manager, and call the decision to dismiss him as retaliation. In response, they heard that “the appeal is pointless because the professor agreed to change the form of employment in the hospital”

To the Clinical Hospital of them. Prof. A. Grucy in Otwock finds patients with the most complex injuries. It is also the largest orthopedic hospital in Mazovia and one of the largest in Poland. It carries out such procedures as limb replantations (i.e. sewing cut off limbs or fingers) or operations to lengthen the limbs in children.
However, a wage dispute has been going on in the facility for several months, as a result of which 31 specialists resigned on March 44 and they were to leave their jobs on June 30. In April, the departure was also considered by 33 residents, i.e. doctors in the specialization. Ultimately — after reaching an agreement with the management of the facility and a promise of pay rises — Only eight orthopedists resigned.
Therefore, it might seem that the conflict has been resolved. Last week, however, he was dismissed from the position of the head of the Department of Traumatic Surgery of the Musculoskeletal System and Orthopedics prof. Stanisław Pomianowski. Surprised and outraged by the decision of the director of the CMKP, prof. Ryszard Gellert, the doctors wrote an open letter with an appeal to reinstate the current manager, and call the decision to dismiss him as retaliation for supporting colleagues during protests and criticizing the words of the director of the CMKP.
“Losing confidence in me is incomprehensible”
«This wage dispute has been blown. If the doctors don’t come back, the rest of them will follow through with the surgery plan. (…) after a thorough analysis of the situation, we assessed, together with the management of the Clinical Hospital in Otwock, that the current employment level – taking into account the departure of 43 doctors – i.e. 22 orthopedists and 43 residents – poses no threat to the performance of the operations planned in 2022 » — he translated in an interview for the Rynek Zdrowia portal prof. Richard Gellert, director of the Postgraduate Medical Education Center (CMKP), after submitting mass terminations by doctors from Otwock.
It is to these words that prof. Stanisław Pomianowski. According to the Rynek Zdrowia website, prof. Pomianowski noted that w in the event of mass layoffs, there will not be enough specialists (including specialization managers) for resident learning. He also added that such a drastic reduction in “the number of specialists will extend the waiting time for scheduled operations and waiting for consultations in a hospital specialist clinic”, i.e. it will harm patients.
On June 24, prof. Pomianowski also submitted a letter to the director of the hospital, in which he expressed his opinion and suggestions regarding the further operation of the hospital in Otwock. The letter that prof. Pomianowski made available to the Rynek Zdrowia portal, ends with the following sentence — «Currently, as the Head of the Clinic, I do not feel responsible for the current situation«.
The “cut off from responsibility” resulted in the professor being demoted from the position of head of the clinic. «Letter submitted by prof. Pomianowski contains a declaration in which the professor, as the head of the clinic, declares that »that he does not feel responsible for the situation«, also in terms of the clinic’s immediate future. Such an unequivocal cut off from responsibility for the further operation, and above all for the didactic and scientific activity of the CMKP Clinic, especially in the light of the concluded agreement, resulted in the loss of trust of the director of the CMKP and, as a consequence, the decision to dismiss prof. Pomianowski» — informs Agnieszka Pochrzęst-Motyczyńska from the CMKP Communication and Promotion Team in an interview with TVN24.
Prof. Pomianowski emphasizes, however, that the letter submitted by him does not contain a statement that he does not feel responsible for the further functioning of the facility or the teaching and research activities of the clinic. «Hence, the loss of trust in me by the director of the CMKP is incomprehensible to me» — the professor explains in an interview with the Rynek Zdrowia portal.
“The appeal is pointless”
«It is difficult to find a man who would be more suited to perform such a function than prof. Stanisław Pomianowski. He is a scientist known all over the world, author and co-creator of the radial head prosthesis valued in the world, and also a man bestowed by all his colleagues with the highest respect and esteem » — we read in the open letter of doctors from the hospital in Otwock, who protested against the dismissal of prof. Pomianowski from his position, and they call this decision retaliation for supporting colleagues during protests and criticizing the words of the director of the CMKP.
In an interview with Rynek Zdrowia, the doctors also emphasized that the form of dismissal of the professor “deviates from all ethical norms”. According to medical reports, two ladies from CMKP appeared in the professor’s office last Monday with a letter from prof. Gellert announcing the cancellation, in which no reason was given for such a move by the management.
The CMKP management refrains from commenting, but according to the findings of the Health Market, doctors have already received a reply to their letter. Orthopedists they were informed that “the appeal is pointless because the professor agreed to change the form of employment in the hospital”.
Indeed prof. Pomianowski will stay in the hospital and from August 1 he will start working at the clinic part-time as a consultant. However, Stanisław Pomianowski explains that after receiving the dismissal from the position of the head of the clinic, the hospital director presented him with two options — dismissal or transition to a fixed-term part-time contract as hospital consultant.
«In order to be able to stay in the hospital, I chose the option of employing me for a half-time job as a consultant while maintaining the above-mentioned job at CMKP. I have not been presented with other options» — explains in an interview with Rynek Zdrowia, emphasizing that he was the head of the clinic by winning competitions in 2006, 2012 and 2018 at CMKP, with the extension of the possibility to work in this position until 30.09.2024/XNUMX/XNUMX.
