The pregnancy belt
What is the pregnancy belt?
The pregnancy belt is a support belt, more or less rigid, specifically designed for pregnant women. There are different models:
- not very wide belts worn at the level of the pelvis, just under the belly
- wider belts covering the belly (usually with stretch fabric in the belly and a reinforced band under the belly)
- belts passing above and below the belly
Depending on the model, the pregnancy belt can be fitted with more or less flexible stays to ensure effective support and elastic side straps. Others, more flexible, come in the form of a wide stretch band. Depending on the model, the belt is worn under clothing or over.
It should not be confused with the pregnancy headband, a simple strip of stretchy fabric that has only one aesthetic goal: to nicely highlight the belly of the mother-to-be.
What is the pregnancy belt used for?
During pregnancy, various factors promote the onset of lower back pain. The weight of the uterus shifts the body’s center of gravity forward. To compensate for this imbalance, the back arches: this is hyperlordosis in pregnant women. At the same time, hyperlaxity of the ligaments (under the effect of relaxin and estrogen), distension and hypermobility of the sacroiliac joints (under the effect of hormonal impregnation as well) and the relaxation of abdominal muscles increase the strain on the lower back.
The pregnancy belt will help correct this imbalance and relieve the back by effectively supporting the weight of the belly in the front.
By ensuring a good position of the pelvis, certain belts such as the Physiomat recommended by Dr Bernadette de Gasquet, are also indicated in the event of circulatory problems, hypermobility of the pubic symphysis, ligament pain (Lacomme syndrome), sensation of heaviness, frequent urge to urinate, urinary incontinence, uterine contractility.
The pregnancy belt is not necessary for all pregnant women, but it is very useful in certain situations: future mothers who work long hours on their feet, those who already suffered from back pain before their pregnancy due to ‘weak musculature, or pregnant women who gained a lot of weight during their pregnancy.
Precautions for using the pregnancy belt
Before any purchase, it is recommended to seek advice from your gynecologist or midwife on the preferred model and its proper use.
The belt should not compress the stomach or hinder mobility. Some are only made to be worn upright and should be removed while seated so as not to compress the stomach. Likewise, it is not advisable to wear the pregnancy belt all day in order to let the back “work” and adapt to the changes in pregnancy. Exercises such as tilting the pelvis and stretching can help.
We will also take care to choose the size of the belt according to the hip circumference. The ideal remains to try different models to test their comfort. Also prefer an easily washable model.
