Pharmacies will soon run out of a drug called Alfadiol. It is a preparation in the form of capsules containing alfacalcidol, a synthetic derivative of vitamin D. The manufacturer of the drug informed that there will be no new supplies.

Alfadiol will disappear from pharmacies
The prescription drug Alfadiol containing alfacalcidol, a synthetic derivative of vitamin D, will soon disappear from pharmacies. Its role is primarily to absorb calcium from the digestive system and transport it to the bone tissue.

The manufacturer of the drug is GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals SA.
Alfadiol has only one substitute registered in Poland – the drug Alfacaldicol ELC (currently unavailable or very difficult to obtain in pharmacies). Drug substitutes contain the same active substance, but may differ in the composition of excipients.
Alfadiol – what is it used for?
Alfadiol is primarily used for osteoporosis, which can occur in women with menopause and men with menopause. With age, the resources of vitamin D in the body are depleted, and the period of menopause additionally affects its deficiency.
Age-related osteoporosis can lead to severe skeletal damage. Therefore, the drug Alfadiol especially recommended elderly people. In addition, it should be consumed if the doctor notices significant deficiencies of calcium in the blood, which is especially prone to patients with kidney diseases.

Alfadiol – indications
Detailed indications for the use of Alfadiol are:
- senile and postmenopausal osteoporosis, accompanied by vitamin deficiency. D or deficiency of its active metabolites,
- renal osteodystrophy,
- hypoparathyroidism,
- osteomalacia and rickets resistant to treatment with vitamin D alone,
- hypocalcemia, in particular concomitant with diseases that may impair the process of vitamin D hydroxylation in the kidneys,
- calcium metabolism disorders coexisting with chronic renal failure,
- only in children – nephrotic syndromes caused by long-term use of glucocorticosteroids.
